Wired Tours the LEGOLAND Model Shop in California That Contains More Than 3 Million LEGO Bricks

Wired traveled to the LEGOLAND Model Shop in Carlsbad, California to take a tour of the amazing workshop that contains over 3 million LEGO bricks in 70 different colors. Master model builders Robbie McCarthy and Bill Gowdy showed off LEGO’s proprietary 3D modeling software and explained how they intricately bring their large and small creations to life.

If you’re a fan of Lego bricks, you’ll love the Legoland Model Shop. The workspace is the base of operations for Legoland California, and the birthplace of thousands of Lego creations found throughout the park. Here, certified Lego Master Builders like Robbie McCarthy and Bill Gowdy work in teams to assemble models from tens of thousands of individual bricks. It’s a magical, if potentially overwhelming, place; the space houses more than 3-million bricks, organized in colorful bins that line the Model Shop’s tall, expansive shelves. (read more)
