Veteran Fights Hard To Adopt the Combat Dog Who Saved His Life

If the dogs put in the time for the country, then the country owes it to them to put the time into them

This incredibly touching video from National Geographic tells the story of Layka the combat dog who put herself in harm’s way to save the lives of the soldiers she was trained to protect and of Sgt. Julian McDonald, the determined veteran who fought hard to adopt the heroic dog despite objections that Layka was far too aggressive for domestic life. The naysayers were ultimately proven wrong when Layka was brought home for the first time.

She saved my life that’s why I’m here. So I owed it to her to save her life and that’s why I wanted to adopt her and that’s why I fought so hard to adopt her even though people are saying no, she’s too aggressive. They’re not scary, they’ve done scary things but they deserve homes and they deserve good homes. First time I brought her home my son was just over one years old, she went right up to him and submitted to lay down her back and my one-year-old son walked over there and got on top of her chest and grabbed her ears and put his thumb in her nose and and put his hand in her mouth and she wasn’t doing anything, she was just laying there.
