Usmagazine.com has just posted never-before-seen footage of Michael Jackson catching on fire while shooting the Pepsi commercial at Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on January 27th, 1984, which quite possibly lead to his ultimate addiction to painkillers and obsession with plastic surgery.
On the sixth take, though, things went horribly wrong: The fireworks erupted too early, igniting Jackson’s head in flames. Jackson is at first unaware he’s on fire, and continues dancing.
Thanks to Jason Laskodi for the tip!

wow this is crazy! poor michael…im sad he had to experience that !
he did his best to make the best commercials and everything for us.
-i was just on google yesterday trying to find this footage…and i couldnt find anything–i was interested in knowing so thanks.
That looked horrible. His hairspray must have kept that fire burning – looked like my Whisperlite camping stove when it was misbehaving.
ugh, i hate the whole “THIS MOMENT LEAD TO HIS DRUG ADDITION” title, such an unnecessary exagerration ploy by the mag.
Kind of weird to think that Michael Jackson did more pills in the last decade that Eminem will do in his entire lifetime…
LOL… I’m sorry, but I had to giggle on that one too! Sorry Micheal Jackson fans! If people weren’t so damn funny, I would be laughing right now.
Thats a first on seeing that clip. Years ago when that happened, I thought they were just making a big deal over it just because he was “Micheal Jackson”. Um, after seeing this clip I can see that it was a pretty big deal. This is horrible to say, but I had to giggle a little. I know thats probably bad but I couldn’t help it. Sorry Micheal Jackson fans!
it looks like only the top of his head was burnt, it didn’t seem like there were burns on his face at all. It looks like US is just trying to stir up gossip or something.
His face wasn’t burned at the time…. and this isn’t “shocking and new”, it was shown on the normal tabloid shows back in the day; just a re-hash to get traffic, which is sad in itself. The fact they use the word fireworks is proof alone that either the editor is a 10 year old or it’s all about overstating … or both.
