The 2nd Annual NorCal Regional Grilled Cheese Invitational

The 2nd Annual NorCal Regional Grilled Cheese Invitational takes place in San Francisco’s Dolores Park on Saturday, February 21st. Registration is now open and the deadline to enter your sammich is Wednesday, February 18th at 6:00pm.

The NorCal Regional Grilled Cheese Invitational is an official competition with trophies awarded for three different categories of competitive Grilled Cheese. Anyone is welcome to attend this event and judge sammiches. You do not have to compete in order to judge. All judging is done using standardized ballots and a patented, supercomputer that scientifically tabulates the results to determine the winners. This is a serious competition and only the strong will achieve victory in The Grilled Cheese Invitational, with all the associated bragging rights available therein.

For the NorCal regional competition, the organizers of the GCI have selected three categories of competition, definitions are as follows:

The Missionary Position: Standard bread, standard butter and standard cheese. No additional ingredients or flavorings allowed.

The Kama Sutra: Any kind of bread, any kind of butter, and any kind of cheese (or blend of cheeses) plus additional ingredients.

The Honey Pot: Any kind of bread, any kind of butter, any kind of cheese (or blend of cheeses), and any additional ingredients, but a sandwich that is sweet in flavor, or would best be served as dessert.

Though the NorCal Regional Grilled Cheese Invitational has several understandable rules, the strangest and probably most vocalized rule is “No Flame Throwers.” This rule encompasses the nature of the competition, where culinary pioneers play fast and hard against the line of grilling acceptability.

Grilled Cheese Invitational events are also being planned for Austin (3/15) and Los Angeles (4/25).
