Tangible Orchestra, A Proximity Sensing Music Installation

Art collective Picarøøn created the Tangible Orchestra installation their home of Edinburgh, Scotland, deploying a number of cylinders that light up and play music when they sense someone standing nearby. The composition of the music adjusts based on the position of the listeners who activate it.

Walking through the installation not only means to activate instruments that contribute to the whole piece, but to dub the piece with every step: Depending on the listener’s position and the distance to the speakers that rest within the cylinders, the relative strength of all instruments shifts.
