Mark Ellinger Photography Show
Sat, Dec 13
7 PM-10PM
free
Saturday December 13th at 7PM there will be an exhibition of the
photographic art of Mark Ellinger. Food and drink will be available.
Donations appreciated.
This follows Saturday afternoon's "Sublime Sixth"
exhibition and sale of works by reclusive artists: Nappy Chin,
Renee Jones,Mark, and Dan Cope; 9AM to 3PM on the street(!) at
the corner of 6th andMinna. "I want to use these images to make
San Franciscans aware of thehistory of this part of the city, the
importance of preserving and restoring these buildings and the
need for maintaining them as housing for low-income residents.
By showing my work on 6th st., I also want to give a ray of hope
to other addicts or anyone who feels trapped in a hopeless
situation."
Ellinger lost big parts of his life in 95 which culminated in his
introduction to heroin. He spent the next five years as a homeless
junkie. In 2000 he was hospitalized after injecting 'dirty heroin', lost
part of his leg, then kicked it and landed on 6th St. in an SRO hotel.
Since then he has become a housing activist and works with the
Central CitySRO Collaborative as a tenant representative. Recently
he began photographing hotels and people in the central city area
with a digital camera; then using a computer to manipulate the
images.
His photos have a compassionate and constructionist wash; as
if a water color painter choose to add soul to the aged brick alleys,
faded facades and exhaust dimmed signs.
Please come and hang out as long as you like.
