Photo Sex - book release party & exhibition

Fri, Sep 12
8pm - midnight

no admission charge, but donations are welcome

Mark I. Chester proudly hosts a book release party for and a photo
exhibition from David Steinberg's new book, "Photo Sex-Fine Art Sexual
Photography Comes of Age" on Fri. Sept. 12th, from 8pm - midnight at the
Mark I. Chester studio at 1229 Folsom St. in SOMA in SF. To check out
the book and show information go to mchester.best.vwh.net/

There will be a presentation by editor David Steinberg at 9pm and
readings/performances by local writers/performers including Patrick
Califia, Kirk Read, Carol Queen, Suzi Suzuki, Matt Sycamore Bernstein,
Joe Arcangelini and Susie Hara throughout the night. Books will be
available for purchase in both paperback ($35) and hard cover ($60).

The exhibition, a selection of 60 fine art sexual images by 21 of the
photographers from the book, will be open Sat/Sun Sept 13th/14th from
1-6pm. David Steinberg will also be at the gallery that weekend to meet
viewers and talk about the book.

In addition, the exhibition will also be open Folsom Fair weekend, Sept
27th and Sun Sept 28th, from 11am - 6pm. It is open during the Folsom
St Fair which runs right outside Chester's studio. It can be viewed at
other times by appointment thru Oct. 5th.

The book, published by Down There Press, with a foreword by A. D.
Coleman, highlights the ever shifting kaleidoscope of sex in 115
duotone photosm through the eyes of 31 different photographers
including Michael Rosen, Jan Saudek, Barbara Nitke, Mark I. Chester,
Paul Dahlquist, Mariette Pathy Allen, Michele Serchuk, Charles
Gatewood, Phyllis Christopher and Tee A. Corinne.

Photo Sex is beautiful, thought provoking and ground-breaking. It
presents real people in sexual images that look at and think about sex
far beyond the well-worn perspectives and abuses of commercial
pornography and erotic photography. You can find it all here - a
rainbow of colors, body shapes, ages, and sexual orientations -
including erotically taboo images of people with physical disabilities -
in sexual connections that range from the sweet and sensual, to
bondage and fisting.

Photo Sex starts off where the High Risk collections of prose left
off. In his foreword, Coleman not only notes that Photo
Sex "unquestionably denotes a raising of the bar for what Steinberg
calls "sexual photography," but that the publication of Photo Sex and
the work in it is a political act because "many in this country would
prevent you from seeing these pictures and buying this book. They
would, in fact, punish all those involved..."

Further information on the show, including 31 photographs from the
book, links to each photographer's website or email contact,
Steinberg's introduction and Coleman's foreword is on the website.
