Frank Garvey's CHILDREN'S CRUSADE is an exhibit of paintings and robots
dealing with the maintenance of oppressive economic systems and
slavery in
the world's richest places - the so-called advanced capitalist,
"developed"
world. In these countries, a middle-class culture sits astride the twin
towers of super-rich bourgeoisie and ultra-oppressed proletariat like a
blanket of soothing obfuscation, helping disguise the murderous
deformations of personality that allow crack addicts to murder their
friends and billionaires to murder whole nations. Garvey's work rips the
social veneer from the realities of life in America, showing the
underlying
stress lines that we spend so much energy and money to avoid... using
whores, junkies, beggars and thieves as metaphors for the alienation
of all
of us in this collapsing empire.
The CHILDREN'S CRUSADE title references the rise of a new danger in the
world, a true culmination of the robotic red-light district of our
time. In
the United States and around the world, the working class and
super-exploited toilers are immersed in a bath of right-wing
religio-fascism from cradle to grave. Thus we become cannon fodder to
the
religious wars of our modern-day enlightened ruling classes, who spread
this fanaticiscm to distract us from progressive and socialist mass
movements, considered far more dangerous to the billionaires. As in
pre-Nazi Germany in the 1920's, the fascist distraction turns around and
bite the hand that fed, coiffed and manicured it, even unto the
advent of a
new darkness that will make WWII look like Disneyland...
