At a time when misunderstanding of Arab culture is at an all-time
high, there may be no more potent an instrument in dispelling common
myths than the movie screen. Cinema helps people of different
cultures understand those they perceive as different, even
threatening, by giving them a new perspective on the subject. At the
same time, Arab cinema sheds light on traditions and cultures whose
roots extend for centuries. As interest in Arab cinema grows, so too
is the Arab Film Festival itself - with new staff, expanded
screenings, a deeper connection with youth audiences, and exciting
new partnerships that symbolize the burgeoning connection of Arab
culture to the world stage. The festival runs from September 23
through October 2nd in San Francisco, San Jose and Berkeley.
