Black Market Auction:
The Independent School of Art will hold a black market auction of =
high quality knock-offs of well-known artists' works.
Date: Saturday, September 24th
Time: Doors Open 6 PM, Silent Auction 6-10 PM,
Live Auction 8:30 - 9 PM
Location: Hayes Valley Market (580 Hayes Street, SF, Corner of Hayes =
and Laguna)
The Independent School of Art will be staging an event titled ISA =
Black Market Auction. Artists selected for this show (which will =
include students from the Independent School of Art as well as over =
60 local and national artists) will be producing high quality knock- =
offs of well-known local, national, and international artists' works. =
During the event these works will be sold through silent and live =
auction at bargain prices. All artists (knockers-off) will receive =
50% of the sale price when their work is sold. All public information =
regarding this event will list the original artists and the knock-off =
artists intermingled so that no one knows who knocked off whom. We =
are simply running a black market auction of great original works, by =
great artists, at great prices. The event will be held at the Hayes =
Valley Market, a 6000 square foot gallery in Hayes Valley (formerly =
John's Hayes Valley Market) run by Albert Herter and Lisa Rybovich =
Crall=E9 (more info below).
Some extra details:
1. Works will not be interpretations, parodies, or inspired by, but =
true replications.
2. Work will be no less than 90% accurate. Or at least we're trying.
3. Artists were requested to knock-off works that they would like to =
own themselves or wish to see more readily available to others.

About the Independent School of Art:
The Independent School of Art is a viable and experimental =
alternative to the institutional model of college-level art =
education. The ISA is run through a barter-based, nomadic system, =
where both students and teachers are collectively responsible for =
negotiating the school's existence in the world. The school's barter- =
based tuition system makes explicit and direct the social contract =
between students and teachers and honors their collective labor as a =
vital form of cultural production. By existing without a primary site =
and locating nomadically throughout the Bay Area, the school =
challenges students and teachers alike to imagine how their practice =
might intersect and respond to a lager set of physical situations and =
cultural possibilities. Without institutional affiliations, degrees, =
or public funding, the school exists solely through the labor and =
efforts of it's participants, and thus fosters a proactive approach =
to art education, a real world model where students are challenged to =
determine and create their own artistic realities. The ISA shall =
change year by year, reflecting the ideals, the ambitions, the =
personalities, and the abilities of those in its community. The ISA =
was founded by Jon Rubin, and currently run in collaboration with Bob =
Linder.
In an effort to create a one-room schoolhouse environment of shared =
learning and mentorship, seminars presented through The Independent =
School of Art include students of all ages, levels of experience, and =
disciplines. The ISA prioritizes an action-based approach to arts =
education and cultural discourse and complements it's curricular =
offerings with student and faculty designed exhibitions, lectures, =
and publications. These multi-disciplinary public interfaces are a =
central part of the school's pedagogy, and serve a vital function by =
engaging the students in the direct creation of public culture. For =

About The Hayes Valley Market:
Located on the northeast corner of Hayes and Laguna, in downtown San =
Francisco's Hayes Valley neighborhood, the Hayes Valley Market is a =
brand new, transitory and experimental art space/gallery that will be =
operating for about one year before the building it resides in gets =
demolished to make way for senior housing. The building is rumored =
to have originally been one of California's oldest Safeways, and has =
continued to serve as a food and beverage market until its recent =
change of ownership.
The building was recently bought by the owners of a local old-age =
community, and has been temporarily leant to Albert Herter and Lisa =
Rybovich Crall=E9, the gallery's managers, to serve as an art gallery =
for the year or so that it will take to get the necessary permits =
squared away. Because of the unconventional and transitory nature of =
the Hayes Valley Market, many of the restrictions that most art =
galleries face do not apply. If you are an artist, or have ideas for =
the gallery, or would simply like to get involved, please email =
