You know how you go around doing what you've been doing for years,
and all of a sudden everyone's doing the same thing? You're just
doing your own thing, but suddenly it's all "trendy." That's what's
happened to Writers With Drinks. We starting using flamethrower
teleprompters years ago, but now all those other spoken word events
are using them too! I saw people coming out of Porchlight with third-
degree burns all over their faces and their eyes singed shut, and I
was like, "they stole our schtick!" Likewise, we totally invented the
whole thing of inflicting permanent nerve damage on any audience
member who didn't understand the poems. And now it's like SOP at half
the slams in the Bay Area. We're pissed!
So this Saturday, we're going to roll out a whole new barrel of
tricks at Writers With Drinks. We can't go into much detail, except
that chinchillas *will* be harmed. And so will you.
But luckily, you'll have the words of David Corbett, Suzanne Kleid,
DJ Berkley, Susan St. Aubin, Andrew Boyd and Tina D'Elia to help you
find your happy place in the midst of suffering.
About the readers/performers:
Andrew Boyd is founder of Billionaires for Bush and author of
Culture Jamming 101. He's the guy who posted a scan of your driver's
license and your colonoscopy images on the Internet.
Tina D'Elia is a poetry slam champion and star of a one-woman comedy
show called "Groucho: A Day In The D'Elia Soup." She ties your brain
into knots and uses it for her hammock.
David Corbett, author of two mystery novels, The Devil's Redhead and
Done For A Dime. He was accused of his own murder, but he's looking
for the real killers before his corpse gets cold.
Suzanne Kleid, whose stories have appared in other magazine and
Pindeldyboz. She has an MFA in being blase and an M.Div in hitting
you where you live.
Susan St. Aubin, whose writing appeared in Best American Erotica 2003
and Herotica 4. She downloaded your colonoscopy pictures and
photoshopped them so it looked like you were really Paris Hilton.
DJ Berkley is a comedy trio who performed most recently at Kvetch.
They're those people in the background of all your family pictures,
the relatives you couldn't quite identify but still send holiday
cards to.
About Writers With Drinks: We also invented the thing of padlocking
all the exits and not letting anybody leave until they guessed which
famous science fiction novel we were miming. That's our schtick, and
everyone else should stop ripping it off.
