Minibars, at Dusk
On September 13, 1859, California Senator David C. Broderick and
former Chief Justice David S. Terry engaged in a duel over an unpaid
bar tab, with Broderick dying three days later on the 16th. This
occurred near Lake Merced, and was the last 'legal' duel to be waged
in San Francisco. Terry was later scorned by the public and exiled to
Stockton, whereas Broderick got a fancy street named after him. The
full account of the duel can be read here:

On Friday, September 16, 2005, precisely 146 years after Broderick's
death, we will re-enact that famous duel at the exact location of the
original. Since the actual pistols used in 1859 were recently sold
for $34,500 at an auction, we'll have to make do with a pair of
plastic potato guns. Nonetheless, all comers will have a chance to
face off against the adversary of their choosing, while the rest of
us watch from the sidelines performing our own shots using well-
equipped minibars.
Wear period dress and bring your minibar or other implements of self-
destruction. Be prepared to fling a glove around in a challenging
manner. Invite an evil twin if you're into metaphysical dualism.
