F*in Design
Thu, Sep 29
6 pm Reception, 7pm Lecture
$10 AIGA members, $20 nonmembers, $15 students
There are some things we just don't talk about. In fact, there are a
lot of things. We do a lot of looking (mostly at work we've already
seen), revel in our own greatness, and then go out for cocktails.
Well, the cocktails are staying, but business as usual is out the
window. AIGA SF invites you to join us for our F*in Design lecture
series - three intimate, candid talks about the professional F-words
we all struggle with, but seldom truly address: Faith, Fear and
Foolishness.
Speakers: Michael Osborne, Sean Adams, Joel Templin & Gaby Brink
Faith
Thursday, September 29
Michael Osborne
If fear is temporarily forgetting that everything is really okay, and
failure is the first step to succeeding, then faith is the force that
powers us through the great unknown. Sometimes our faith is blind,
and we charge forward with a passionate heart and a determined will.
Other times our faith is all we have - the only thing between us and
fear and failure. Keep the faith, man. Have faith, sister. Faith is
confidence, self esteem and trust. Faith is kryptonite. Step out on
that ledge. The air is fresh and the view is astounding.
Fear
Thursday, October 20
Sean Adams
Over the past ten years, we've made mistakes. Big ones. Some of our
mistakes were a collision of events that hit like a train wreck. Some
were self-produced. All of our mistakes were motivated by fear. That
fear worked as an intense motivator, but it also led us down paths
that ended with hours of therapy. When is fear appropriate? When is
taking a leap of faith foolish? Are we fearful of the outside world,
or our own internal issues? Typically, we ask these questions weekly
- unless Noreen seems cranky and I'm afraid to talk with her.
Foolishness
Thursday, November 10
Joel Templin & Gaby Brink
What role should foolishness play in the creative process? How do we
come up with the next big idea and push our creative boundaries? Over
the years, we've learned that some of our most interesting work has
been inspired by a little tomfoolery on smaller-scale projects from
years before. In November, find out why we believe a little
irreverent experimentation is essential to keeping our designer minds
fresh - even though we may occasionally end up making fools of
ourselves in the process.
