The Neighborhood Parks Council and the Mayor's Office of Neighborhood
Services Present: JIM DIERS
In these times when local needs are outstripping government's
capacity to respond and when growing numbers of people are thinking
of themselves as taxpayers rather than as citizens, local government
must find new ways to engage its constituents and to tap the assets
that are abundant in every community. Learn how the City of Seattle
confronted these challenges by establishing a Department of
Neighborhoods in 1988. A first-hand account of Seattle's experience
will be presented by Jim Diers, an outstanding national public
speaker and visionary community leader on Sept 14 from 6PM to 8PM and
Reception at 5:30 p.m. At the Milton Marks Auditorium in the
California State Building, 455 Golden Gate Avenue.
Jim is the author of Neighbor Power: Building Community the Seattle
Way, recently published by the University of Washington Press and
will speak about the lessons learned over 20 years in organizing
neighbors in the city of Seattle. Jim Diers set up and directed the
Department of Neighborhoods in Seattle for 14 years. Numerous
innovative programs were initiated under his watch such as little
city halls, community-driven planning, neighborhood matching funds
and P-Patch community gardens. The programs have also enhanced
government collaboration across departments and with communities
while leveraging hundreds of millions of dollars in additional
resources.
