Bauernkrieg/Peasants' War
is the second of three films by Swiss director Erich Langjahr who
takes a close look at farmers and their endangered existence in an
era of mass production and global ized markets. Will farming in times
of the free market economy survive? Langjahr 's lens seems to give
the answer: patient observation and calm montage direct the viewer's
gaze towards very disturbing images of degrading transformations of
creatures into objects. Cows become machines for milk and meat
production and bulls turn into machines that produce semen for
artificial insemination.
The film has won numerous awards and was shown at festivals
throughout Europe.
