"Portrait Parlours"
New Paintings and
Drawings by
David Tomb
September 1-October 1,2005
We are please to announce a solo show for San Francisco based
painter David Tomb. The show will opens Friday September 1, and run
through October 1,2005. There will be a reception for the artist on
Friday, September 9, from 6 through 8pm.
David is well known in the Bay area and has shown his paintings
and drawings nationally for many years including solo museum
shows..As a full time artist David makes a lot of work and has been
compared to jazz musicians where he creates his art in very
expressive and improvisational ways. Finding an original and
innovative perspective on portraiture is an ongoing challenge. His
work has been compared to Lucian Freud, Alice Neel and Alex Katz, but
clearly David has his own vision with each picture evolving out of
his multiple sessions communicating with each person. There is
attention to emotions and moods that surface through the private time
with the model and then David will take off with his own creation.

David will be showing a new series of paintings that are a
departure for him in scale as well as approach. There is more
emphasis on his sensitive lines with layered glazes applied loosely.
Compositions remain surprisingly strong creating a dynamic tension
with the viewer.
He continues his large scale drawings of a wide variety of friends
and acquaintances that are captured unexpectedly and
spontaneously.
