Dan's Family Fun Park
Fri, Sep 9
6:00pm-9:00pm

Dan's Family Fun Park, a new exhibition at the PLAySPACE gallery at
California College of the Arts, takes the concept of an American
family fun park and places it within the gallery space. The
exhibition confronts the topic of leisure and it's inescapable
association with commerce while concurrently challenging the viewer's
expectations in regards to the seemingly appropriate behavioral
patterns of the gallery. Dan's Family Fun Park opens on September
6th, 2005 and runs through September 16th, 2005. An opening
reception will be held on Friday, September 9th, 2005.
As the viewer enters PLAySPACE they will be engulfed by a hive of
activity, immediately witnessing a video/project space converted into
a batting cage and a gallery floor dominated by three playable mini-
golf holes. Both of these activities allow the viewer to be engaged
either as an active participant (Swinging a bat, putting a ball) or
as an active observer sitting on the picnic benches. Along with the
games, Dan's Family Fun Park offers merchandise, food and refreshments.
This exhibition is a first time collaboration between Daniel Purbrick
and Daniel Reneau. Both artists recently moved to the Bay area to
study at the California College of the Arts graduate program.
Purbrick, born in the UK, comes from Oxford, England and his work
focuses on labor's position within a conceptual art practice.
Reneau, born in Kansas City, Missouri, is an abstract painter whose
work focuses on design aesthetics and its effects on contemporary
culture. Purbrick's perspective of the American family fun park
derives its origins from an outsiders position whereas Reneau's
experience comes from childhood memories of growing up in the Midwest.
