Gallery Statement:
In the art installation Assisted Living, two uncompromising
individuals ,
Michael Campbell and Kevin King , playfully collaborate, probing the
way we live
: our props, objects, accessories, toys and status symbols and the
system that
creates them.
With the colorful, shiny objects found in toy stores, sex shops, rummage
sales, or container marts, Campbell and King create hybrids and
dysfunctional
objects that reveal the hypnotically mercantile reasoning hidden in
the "happy
messages" sent by the "useful things" that "assist" us with our daily
life .
In Assisted Living, the seduction of the skillfully crafted clusters
and
assemblages mirrors the way consumerism has absurdly ritualized our
existence;
it also seems to ironically comment on the aura of the art object,
the idea of
its "commodity" .
Whether it is in collecting art objects or in collecting objects to
make art,
Campbell and King go on their object-finding missions fueled by a shared
longing to find and create a subversive and extraordinary universe
infused with
subliminal social commentaries .
In Assisted Living, Campbell and King have created such a universe.
