Busted Chairs Theater Project to Present MUMIA
MUMIA, a one-man show performed by Marcus Hicks and
directed by Drae Campbell, takes an intimate look at how
Mumia Abu-Jamal, an award-winning journalist convicted in
1982 of murdering a police officer in Pennsylvania, copes
isolated in prison amid the effort to reverse the judgment
against him developing around him. Inconsistencies in the
case and new evidence suggesting his innocence has
garnered the attention of civil rights advocates who believe
Mr. Abu-Jamal was wrongfully convicted and denied the right
to a fair trial. Mumia Abu-Jamal's case is currently on appeal
before the Federal District Court in Philadelphia.
During his more than 20 years in prison, Mumia Abu-
Jamal has written three books, most notably Live =46rom Death Row.
Through Mr. Abu-Jamal's own words, Mr. Hicks
transcends on stage the feelings of isolation and remoteness,
anger and frustration, the prisoner has developed living for
more than two decades in the absence of the most basic
forms of human contact. The power behind Mr. Abu-Jamal's
words is enhanced by a multimedia presentation depicting
many of the key figures responsible for his incarceration.
