ABOUT THE CAF=C9 SHOW:
Over 100 painters, photographers, sculptors and photographers and =20
50 performing artists will come together during a two week exhibition =20=
and live performance series that promises an assortment of visual =20
arts and live entertainment even bigger and better than last year! =20
Proceeds from the 3rd Annual Caf=E9 Show will raise money to help =20
preserve the services and facility of SOMARTS, a pioneering San =20
Francisco Arts and Cultural institution since 1979.
Celebrating the dynamic cafe tradition of the 18th-19th centuries, =20
over 300 framed and unframed work will be displayed 'salon style' in =20
the SOMARTS Bay Gallery. Unlike traditional gallery shows and silent =20
auctions, the public may purchase and take home works 'immediately =20
off the wall'. Winning bids from each of 4 Silent Auctions will be =20
removed at the end of each of the special performance events, and the =20=
sold works will be replaced with new pieces - to encourage return =20
patrons.
On opening night the gallery will open up to allow view of a full =20
theater performance of dozens of musicians, poets and other =20
performance artists; silent auction close end of night; wine bar. $5-=20
$10 donation. Two Saturday afternoon variety shows are scheduled for =20=
those who can not attend the opening - or those who want to come back =20=
to view the art again, and enjoy a completely different line up of =20
local talent. On August 25, an equally spectacular closing =20
celebration of Caf=E9 Arts and Culture at SOMARTS will ensure that =20
every artistic taste and cultural curiosity has been explored. If you =20=
can not attend and wish to make a donation, please contact: Betsie =20

About SOMARTS and why The Cafe Show Benefit
SOMARTS is a powerful force in the international and local art =20
scene. It serves the community in ways that commercial galleries are =20
often unwilling or unable to do. The centralized space is large and =20
flexible and accommodates year round exhibits of experimental, multi-=20
cultural, and international work in theater, film and the visual =20
arts. Their resources, professional support services, and willingness =20=
to take risks in hosting unconventional art and performance pieces =20
have made them an invaluable and much beloved organization among San =20
Francisco artists and patrons of the arts.
Although the City of San Francisco supports SOMARTS, recent =20
cutbacks in arts funding and rising upkeep costs have forced SOMARTS =20
to downsize its projects and staff considerably. For the artists' =20
community, this is an opportunity for all of us to say thank you and =20
we value you directly to SOMARTS, in word and deed. Realizing that =20
this community gallery and theater space of over 30 years is in =20
jeopardy of being closed, local artists have banned together to help =20
SOMARTS. Painters, photographers and printmakers have paid a $25 =20
entry fee for displaying their work and are also offering 50% of =20
sales to SOMARTS during this two-week exhibit. Over 300 pieces will =20
be on display and for sale and over 100 works have been donated to a =20
Silent Auction. Musicians, poets and other performance artists have =20
also generously donated their talents to produce a huge opening =20
celebration of Cafe Arts and Culture at the SOMARTS Bay Gallery. For =20
