The Rise and Fall of the Monkey King
Thu, Aug 4
8:00pm
$20-$22
El Gato Del Diablo presents the World Premiere of THE RISE AND FALL
OF THE MONKEY KING by Blair Gageloft. With influences of Brecht,
Butoh dance, and Shakespearean villains, this searing satire tells
the tale of a ruler gone mad, despised by his people, hell-bent on
invading other nations without provocation, driven by a PR machine
that loves Neil Diamond.
Set in a nation not unlike our own, THE RISE AND FALL OF THE MONKEY
KING chronicles the reign of a puppet ruler placed into power by
feudal lords desperate to protect the lifestyles they have become
accustomed to. Following a fraudulent political takeover, a
publicist, unhindered by ethics or good taste, is hired to wage an
illegal war on an underdeveloped nation to distract the Monkey's
people and scare them into patriotic submission. All insurrectionists
left standing are castrated for good measure. Among a cast of
familiar characters, audience members can expect a cameo appearance
by Lynndie England and the Abu Ghraib Dance Ensemble. This is the
first play by Blair Gageloft, whose name may or may not be an anagram
for "liberal faggot."
