Springbok Pronking, Small African Antelopes Jumping Around Sillily

If you’re a sprinbok, that means pronking!

In this clip from BBC’s Africa, a group of springbok — small antelopes from southwestern Africa — engage in the behavior known as pronking, which means to boast or show off. When pronking, the springbok jumps off the ground with all four feet simultaneously and holds its legs mostly stiff with its back arched and head pointing downward. Though the BBC says we’re not exactly sure why springbok pronk, several explanations include as a way to discourage predators, as a mating ritual, or simply out of excitement.
