Spherical Harmonics, A Surreal Experimental Computer Animation

“Spherical Harmonics” is a surreal experimental animation that uses computer graphics to create bizarre, fantasy imagery. The animation was created by Alan Warburton for Animate Projects and The Photographers’ Gallery. The animation is on display at The Photographers’ Gallery in London through April 9, 2014. Warburton talks about the animation in this interview with The Photographers’ Gallery.

Spherical Harmonics is about the strange power of the CGI image. It is a hermetically sealed fantasy, full of digitally created memories, counterfeit physics and controlled accidents. A place where reality fails because it’s too perfect, and where spectacular CGI setpieces are replaced with more introverted and complex fantasies – fantasies of the digital-artist-as-god, lost in uncanny valley.
