SoundWorks Collection talks to Randy Thom and Dean DeBlois, the sound designer and director behind the recent Dreamworks animated film How to Train Your Dragon 2, for a behind the scenes peek into the sound of the film. I think one of the things we discovered on the first film was that balance between music and sound effects was often at odds. But having the perspective of the first film, I realized that there were scenes that we could orchestrate to be purely music driven or, in some cases, purely effects driven.
