Science Friday Explains How Aquariums Care for Cuttlefish, A Fascinating but Short-Lived Cephalopod

In “Caring for Cuttlefish“, Science Friday takes a trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Northern California to interview Bret Grasse, who is tasked with overseeing the aquarium’s population of cuttlefish — unique and fascinating cephalopods able to rapidly change the color of their skin. Due to the fact that the mollusks generally live under a year, great pains are taken to ensure the aquarium’s population remains intact.

Since cuttlefish are such short-lived animals, it makes it very challenging to keep an exhibit stocked full of large, healthy adult cuttlefish. We need to alter their life cycles, and we can do that with temperature.
