Scientists have discovered a new bacteria unlike anything we’ve ever seen in the subglacial Lake Vostok in Antartica, RIA Novosti reports. “We call it unidentified and ‘unclassified’ life,” geneticist Sergei Bulat of the St. Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute told the publication. Bulat added that the DNA found during a 2012 expedition is less than 86 percent similar to other known organisms — a match of 90 percent or less is enough to constitute a new species. We just hope the follow-up expedition in May doesn’t find anything Lovecraftian lurking in the Antarctic.
