“Refreshment,” an animated short from Dutch artist Johan Rijpma, follows the evaporation of water as it dries on stone pavement, with the artist continually creating larger versions of patterns left by the partially dried water spots.
This process repeats and with these interventions the ‘life’ of the stain is artificially refreshed and extended to an unnatural length. Which allows new shapes to evolve that otherwise could never have existed.
As with other experimental shorts from Rijpma, the wordless short is hypnotic in its exploration of naturally occurring patterns.
