Proposal: U.S. Should Abolish Daylight Saving Time and Replace It with 19 Time Zones

19 Time Zone U.S. Map

Kevin Depew of The Awl proposes that the U.S. abolish daylight saving time and replace it with 19 time zones, each 9 minutes apart. In the new system Oregon would be in the “Hammer Time” zone and Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont would be on “Syrup Time.” Depew’s satirical proposal is inspired in part by economist Allison Shrager’s proposal to end daylight saving time and reduce the time zones in the lower 48 states to two.
