President Obama Designates Stonewall as the First National Monument Honoring the LGBT Community

Today President Obama declared the legendary Stonewall Inn located in New York City as the first national landmark in the United States to honor the LGBT equality movement, eloquently citing the need to recognize the diversity that defines the nation’s true spirit. The site of community defining riots that occurred during 1969, Stonewall has come to symbolize the LGBT community as a whole.

I’m designating the Stonewall National Monument as the newest addition to America’s National Park System. Stonewall will be our first national monument to tell the story of the struggle for LGBT rights. I believe our national parks should reflect the full story of our country, the richness and diversity and uniquely American spirit that has always defined us. That we are stronger together. That out of many, we are one.
