Dave Schumaker tipped us off to some really amazing photos that Tristan Savatier shot in 2005 of the graffiti covered Public Health Service Hospital (PHSH) in Presidio of San Francisco which has been abandoned since 1988. Here’s the full gallery of photos, including background info on the hospital.

Here are some more photos of the hospital by Cassidy Curtis.

According to The Presidio Trust website, the current plans for the hospital are to rehabilitate and reuse buildings within the 42-acre PHSH district, including adding residential uses to some of the property.

That’s an awesome series of photos, thank you for linking to them Scott. I’ve run by that place a bunch of times, and at the time I would think “what is that?” and then never get around to looking or finding out.

yep the Presidio hospital used to be a great place to explore. There are also some great abandoned homes nearby that used to be fun. I say used to be because for about 2 years now the area has been heavily guarded w/ 24hr security guards present.

So what you’re saying is there’s no more exploring allowed in any of these buildings? What a tease!

There is absolutely no exploring in the hospital–I was told this after working there for a while, helping to develop their archaeological outreach program. You can, however, occasionally get tours of the batteries, the jail, and some of the barracks:

I wish my photos were even a fraction as cool as Savatier’s.

Had a terrific onsite 2 HOUR of the PHSH (my old school, class of 1985) — on Sunday, 3 MAY 2008! We could have stayed much longer, but had to get to Oakland for the A’s v. Rangers game @ 1:00pm.

Access was easy and guards were “friendly” — avoid the guards in the front & back & you’ll be in good shape. You gotta climb the chain-link fence (very easy) then enter through a basement window; remove debris from a window well and go on in. Bring a flashlight and find the stairs, then work your way up. A flashlight is needed in the basement — and a daytime visit is probably best as you’re “just another hiker passing through” — the daylight on floors 1-6 makes visibility and photography MUCH better.

Have fun!
