There are many examples of humans introducing a species to control another going bad but in the case of the fire ant and with diligent, proactive testing the powers that be in Texas have moved forward with the eradication project. The ranchers and farmers in the infested areas are suffering not forgetting the human and overall economic cost. Hopefully it will do more good than harm and so far the results are promising. As long as international trade and travel exists new invasive species will be introduced so it will always be an issue for planet Earth. If humans were to disappear from the planet it would take decades for the rest of animal life to stabilize.

Some how, it seems extremely irresponsible to be having those infected ants crawling around in open containers, potentially risking those ants/flies to escape unintentionally

Creepy. I hope that they have researched the affects of releasing a bunch of new parasitic flies into their ecosystem.
