Photographer David Friedman of PBS INVENTORS interviewed engineer Esther Takeuchi, the inventor of a compact lithium battery that powers millions of implantable cardiac defibrillators. For her life-saving work, President Obama honored Takeuchi with the National Medal of Technology and Innovation in 2008.
It’s said that Esther Takeuchi holds more patents than any other woman in the United States. She received a National Medal of Technology for her developments in long-lasting batteries for implantable defibrillators, which save millions of lives by continuously monitoring heart rhythm and applying therapy as needed. But despite her success as a woman in science, she’s frustrated with how exclusive the sciences still are.
