‘Ornithocide’, Haunting Bird Illustrations Created With Candle Soot

Candle Soot Bird Paintings by Steven Spazuk

In his series Ornithocide, artist Steven Spazuk uses soot from a flame to create haunting illustrations of birds. To create the images, Spazuk uses a candle or torch to mark paper in trails of soot. The birds in his Ornithocide series are depicted with various dangerous man-made implements — a reference to the poisoning of North American birds by pesticides. A short video by Patrick Péris provides a window into Spazuk’s unusual technique.
