I've been running another social WiFi app called Jambo on my powerbook for the last couple of months. I used it at a dev conference I went to recently and met a bunch of people. It looks like their focus is on groups - trying to connect affinity members when they're nearby each other. Their site is http://jambo.net. Also check out crowdsurfer - no experience with them, but seems kind of cool.
