Man Ties His Shoes and Deals Cards With Terminator-Like bebionic3 Prosthetic Hand

Nigel Ackland — a British man who lost his arm in an industrial accident six years ago and had it replaced with the Terminator-like bebionic3 from RSLSteeper — answers common questions about his robotic arm and demonstrates a few of its abilities in this video. The bebionic3 is myoelectric, meaning it is controlled by the muscles in Ackland’s upper arm, and he demonstrates everyday tasks like tying his shoelaces, dealing cards, and making a cup of coffee with the device. The wrist doesn’t flex back and forth, but instead it rotates in a way that a biological human arm cannot.

Having a bebionic hand is like being human again, psychologically I wouldn’t be without it. I can hold the phone, shake hands and wash my left hand normally, which I haven’t been able to for five years! I’m back to being a two finger typist and can even do a very interesting hand signal which I call the 15th function, not particularly functional perhaps, but the psychological benefit is immense! Overall, the bebionic hand has had a great impact on my life, not only does it look more like a human hand but it also functions more like a human hand.
