Researchers at McGill University have developed a series of wearable digital instruments that create sound based on the movement of the body. The instruments were developed at the university’s Input Devices and Music Interaction Lab during a three year project, “Instrumented Bodies: Digital Prostheses for Music and Dance Performance.” The instruments include an articulating spine, visor, and ribs, all of which are embedded with sensors and 3D printed from translucent materials. This spring the instruments were featured in a series of dance/music performances in Canada and Europe. To see the instruments in action, watch this short documentary on the project.
