Ess-a-Bagel at 21st & 1st Ave or 52nd & 3rd beats the current state of H&H which I think is not what it was over a decade ago. When I need emergency bagels fedexed, I call Ess-a-Bagel.

Montague Street Bagels in Brooklyn Heights is worth noting too.

Respectfully, I must beg to differ.

I've been to H&H, I grew up in New Jersey, and Jewish blood runs through my veins. The bagels at H&H are quite good. BUT, the best bagels in all of North America come from Montreal. Once you try one you'll agree -- it's no contest, really.

Since Montreal is a bit out of the way, I propose that the second-best bagels in North America come from our own Stewart Butterfield, who makes them here in SF in the Montreal style.

Good bialys are harder to find than good bagels. For these, in New York, try Kossar's, on Grand Street. See http://www.kossarsbialys.com/

Bagel cognoscenti ask 'what's hot?' or, at H & H, use touch to determine which of the glass-fronted bins is the warmest.
