Electronic System Turns a Human Face Into an Instrument and an Involuntary Performer

In 2008, Japanese artist Daito Manabe began work on an experimental music performance system that hooks up a performer’s face to electrical sensors. The system works in two ways—facial movements can be used to trigger sounds, turning the face into an electronic instrument. Alternatively, electrical stimulation can be applied to the face, creating involuntary facial twitches that can be choreographed to music.
