Bay Area sculptor David Best, who is known for his elaborate art cars and the magnificent temples that he creates at Burning Man, has just completed the construction of a temple> in the new Hayes Green area of San Francisco. It is located on Octavia between Hayes and Fell Streets and will be in place until mid-September. David built his temple with support from The San Francisco Arts Commission and The Black Rock Arts Foundation, which is the non-profit arm of Burning Man. Here’s the press release from Mayor Gavin Newsom’s office.

I shot some photos the temple last Saturday on my way over to document ScrapHouse.

The sculpture, along with the Octavia Boulevard Replacement Project and the Hayes Green underscores San Francisco’s commitment to sustainable, livable cities and is being installed in conjunction with World Environment Day. The sculpture will be in place from late May until mid-September. The Arts Commission has joined with the Black Rock Arts Foundation to launch this project. The mission of the Black Rock Arts Foundation is to support and promote community-based interactive art. The collaboration will create a public/private partnership that will bring more temporary public art to San Francisco.
