Classic Dining: Discovering America’s Finest Mid-Century Restaurants

Classic Dining

Cultural historian and preservationist Peter Moruzzi recently authored Classic Dining: Discovering America’s Finest Mid-Century Restaurants, a photo-filled book that “celebrates the great mid-century restaurants that continue to thrive…across the United States.” The book features vintage images, as well as new photos by the author of Book of Tiki, Sven A. Kirsten. On November 10, 2012 from 7 PM to 9 PM, Moruzzi will present a slideshow titled “Continental Style from Caesar to Thermidor: Classic Dining in America” and signing books at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in Los Angeles, California (event link).

“Classic continental-style dining involves all of the senses.” -Peter Moruzzi

Over the years, the softly lit wood-paneled interiors, starched tablecloths, curved booths, tuxedoed captains, and tableside service that once defined classic continental style fine dining have gradually disappeared. Equally, the number of historic restaurants filled with character and old-school ambiance dwindle with each passing year. Yet, vestiges cling to life in cities large and small. Through vivid new color photography and vintage material, Classic Dining celebrates the great mid-century restaurants that continue to thrive in New York, the greater Miami area, New Orleans, Las Vegas, the Chicago area, Los Angeles, and across the United States. Includes a directory of midcentury restaurants across America.
