Chelada: Budweiser or Bud Light + Clamato

Budweiser / Bud Light & Clamato

In 2008 Anheuser-Busch and Cadbury Schweppes teamed up to release two Latin themed cerveza preparada in the form of Chelada, featuring Budweiser or Bud Light mixed with Clamato. That right, Bud beer mixed with clam & tomato juice.

The name is derived from the Spanish word “michelada,” which loosely translates to “my cold beer.” More importantly, Budweiser & Clamato Chelada and Bud Light & Clamato Chelada are borne of an authentic Latino recipe, which Anheuser-Busch is been proud to bring to the masses.

I know you’re going to think I’m nuts, but they are actually not terrible. Both are leagues above actual Bud and Bud Light.

This came up briefly at the Austin GMan Laughing Squid drink up last month. I mentioned that you can get good ones at certain bars in Austin, but couldn’t come up with any off the top of my head. The Austin Chronicle did a feature on the Best Micheladas in town in August 2008. So now you have something to do the next time you’re in Austin…

I can’t imagine the pre-made stuff is any good, but I’m a big fan of Tecate + V8 + a little Sriracha or Tobasco. Good stuff. :D

I second Shane, above. Unlike Bud or Bud Light, these Chelada’s are actually really good on sunny day, and especially tasty when drunk on a boat… anyone out there have the recipe, so I could mix up my own at home?

Anheuser-Busch has been selling these in south Texas since at least 2006, maybe 2005. They aren’t terrible, but the real deal is way better.

Spanish word “michelada,” ????? WTF never heard of such word in the Spanish lingo. These marketing people need to go to school.

The correct word for beer + clam & tomato juice is “Chabela”. Michelada is for lemon juice mixed with beer. In Mexico D.F. chela = beer.

I love love love bud light clamatos…they are sooo tasty. Have an open mind! They are super excellent when you are a little hungry! I only like them super cold, almost frozen. If you like bloody marys…then you should love clamatos. I think I am their biggest fan….
