A line of cool zip-up Star Wars themed fleece hoodies by clothing company Mad Engine are scheduled to be released in August 2012. Designs come in R2-D2, Darth Vader, Chewbacca, Boba Fett, and a Stormtrooper. You may remember we posted about a similar line of hoodies by Ecko.

Ricky Brigante of Inside the Magic was one of the first people to participate in the Carbon Freeze Me Experience at Walt Disney World’s Star Wars Weekends. He shared some images with us of his visit and even better, a video of himself getting his face 3D scanned in the “Carbon Freezing Chamber”. He expects to receive his personalized Han Solo-style carbonite figurine in about a month.

He describes his visit on Inside the Magic:

Complete with dramatic shades of orange, blue, and red, winding ducts overhead, and plenty of fog, the ominous setup certainly sets the mood for being turned into Jabba’s next wall decoration. And Disney’s Cast Members were playing the part too, frequently referring to me as a “rebel spy” and asking what I “did” to receive my sentence.

Disney Parks Blog posted this “behind-the-scenes” video to promote Star Wars Weekends 2012 at Walt Disney World. In the video, Disney Idea Generator Matt Buchanan holds a Star Wars Weekends brainstorming session and Darth Vader has some interesting (and humorous) ideas of what kinds of events should happen. They also created a cute video where Yoda, Chewbacca and Darth Vader get invited to the event by Disney Event Coordinator Paul Stewart. We recently posted about the Carbon-Freeze Me experience that will be happening at Star Wars Weekends (which are every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 18 to June 10, 2012). The promotional videos were produced by Yellow Shoes Creative Group, in partnership with Lucasfilm.

The Topps Star Wars # 207 C-3PO trading card from 1977 appears to show the golden robot with a golden rod. There is a question of how this legendary blooper card was published: some say it was a disgruntled artist that added in the “error” and some say that the official word is that it was an accident due to “timing and light” (ie. a wardrobe malfunction). According to Snopes.com, this card was later replaced with one that airbrushed out his robo-boner. In any event, there seem to be a few of the lewd ones available for sale on Ebay.

Starting May 18, 2012, visitors to the Star Wars Weekends at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (located at Walt Disney World) can step into the “Carbon Freezing Chamber” and have an 8-inch figurine created of themselves “frozen in carbonite.” The figurine is comprised of a 3D scan of the visitor’s face and the body of Han Solo. According to Star Wars News, the Carbon Freeze Me experience allows guests to the theme park to “relive the famous carbon freezing scene from The Empire Strikes Back.” The 2012 Star Wars Weekends are every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 18 to June 10, 2012.

Using state-of-the-art imaging technology, this experience casts your likeness as a three-dimensional, eight-inch figurine. At the “Carbon Freezing Chamber” (located adjacent to The American Idol Experience), several cameras will capture multiple angles of your face. The images are then reconstructed in a computer for processing, and, in approximately four weeks, the completed figurine is shipped directly to your house.

…The replica figurine can be hung on a wall, just like the gangster Jabba the Hutt did in Return of the Jedi. Guests also receive a light-up wristband.

Plastic Galaxy is an upcoming documentary by Brian Stillman about Star Wars toys (trailer). Stillman is raising funds for the project on Kickstarter. The film is scheduled for release in November 2012.

Through interviews with former Kenner employees, experts, authors, and collectors, the film examines the toys’ history, their influence on pop culture, and the fond and fervent feelings they elicit today.

This custom built LEGO Star Wars organ was created by the design firm Serviceplan Campaign for the 3D theatrical premiere of Star Wars – Episode I: The Phantom Menace in Munich, Germany. Visitors were able to turn the oversized barrel-style organ themselves to play the Star Wars main theme song. Two professional LEGO builders, Rene Hoffmeister and Axel Al-Rubaie, were brought in to build this unique musical instrument which uses over 20,000 bricks. They incorporated the “various settings of the Star Wars saga into their design, so that in addition to the “Death Star”, the desert landscapes of the planet “Tatooine”, the icy landscape of “Hoth” and the jungle of “Endor” can be seen.” The organ has traveled to several German cinemas and currently, it’s touring a variety of LEGO events. Later in 2012, it will be permanently installed at LEGOLAND Germany.

How do you create those geometric shapes?

The more recent ‘geometric’ style Actually harks back to a way of working I dabbled in back in university (at the end of the 90′s). Then the straight lines were a by-product of individually cutting out each shape from coloured card with a scalpel and collaging them together with spray-mount to form the image.

Which is a better way of saying I pretty much ruined the carpet of my university house bedroom.

More recently the polygonal lasso tool in Photoshop has taken most of the brunt out of the graft of creating them. It is merely a process of building coloured shapes to define a form, and me telling people that red triangle is Spider-man and people believing it.

Comics illustrator Ryan Andrews has been creating pixelized versions of Star Wars characters in his own adorable style. “I’d like to do all the main characters from ep 4 first,” he says, “then move on to minor characters until I have basically the whole cast…within reason.”. It’s totally worth mentioning that Ryan makes some fantastic comics too. You should check out “Our Blood Stained Roof” and “Nothing is Forgotten” online for free… Don’t everyone thank me at once.

San Francisco Chronicle pop culture critic Peter Hartlaub recently interviewed Erik Bauersfeld, the voice behind Star Wars: Return of the Jedi characters, Admiral Ackbar and Bib Fortuna. Bauersfeld has held a long career as a radio dramatist, running his Bay Area-based KPFA show called Bay Area Radio Drama (BARD), for several decades. Interesting side note: he has not seen the original Star Wars. While important, the voice work he did for the movie was but a small blip in his career.

Bauersfeld was unaware of the Internet memes and surge in popularity for Ackbar and “It’s a trap!” He seemed to find the University of Mississippi’s drive to have the character named a school mascot especially entertaining.
