The video “Future Hipsters” imagines how aging hipsters might reminisce about the good old days of the Internet in the year 2062. It’s a companion to the Future Hipsters tumblr, both of which are a promotion by Entrinsic for Social Media Week (February 13-17).

Timehop is a web service that sends a daily email of the user’s activity on Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, and Instagram, from exactly one year ago. Timehop combines the features of three previously separate services: 4SquareAnd7YearsAgo, And7YearsAgram, and pastposts.

Today Facebook officially launched their new profile layout Timeline, which presents the user’s updates, photos, and other activity as a chronology (video). Once enabled, a user has seven days to review and tweak their timeline before it becomes viewable by other users.

Timeline gives you an easy way to rediscover the things you shared, and collect your most important moments. It also lets you share new experiences, like the music you listen to or the miles you run.

Designer Aaron Wood has come up with more wonderful tech company war propaganda posters. They’re available as prints on his Etsy store. Back in July we wrote about the first posters in the series, which had a social media focus.

Stamped is a new recommendation sharing service that lets users place their stamp of approval on their favorite places and things and share those recommendations with their friends (intro video). Stamped is currently available for iPhone.

Stamped is a new platform for friends to share only what they like best — restaurants, books, movies, music and more. Everyone gets a limited number of stamps to start, and can earn more if their friends like what they recommend. The result is a new source of quality information that is curated by trusted friends as opposed to large anonymous crowds.

ThinkUp by Expert Labs is a new web app that captures all of the user’s activity on social networks and makes the data available in an interactive database. User’s can search, analyze, visualize, and archive their online activity (demo video). ThinkUp is free, open-source, and was officially released earlier this week.

Mixel is a free iPad app combines art and creativity with social media. To use the app, you create your art collage (the “mixel”) with the elements you choose on an iPad, such as photos or images in your library, then you connect to Facebook and start sharing your art. Other Mixel users can then ‘remix’ your art. Mixel was co-founded by Scott Ostler and Khoi Vinh of The Lascaux Company.

Khoi describes Mixel more in-depth at his site, Subtraction:

Our goal with Mixel is to turn the act of art-making into something incredibly easy, fun and even addictive. Just as importantly, we also want art-making to be deeply social. Mixel is a social network of its own — you sign in with Facebook, and you can find and follow anyone on the network to see all the great work they’re producing. You can also comment, like and share the art, just as you would on any other social network.

But we chose collage for a very important reason: it makes art easy. Photos, the component pieces of every collage, are among the most social and viral content on the Web, and allowing people to combine them into new, highly specific expressions of who they are and what they’re interested in is powerful. Collage also has a wonderfully accessible quality; few people are comfortable with a brush or a drawing implement, but almost everyone is comfortable cutting up images and recombining them in new, expressive, surprising or hilarious ways. We all used to do this as kids.

The YouTube Insult Generator by Adrian Holovaty is a hilarious search engine that sifts through YouTube comments for insults. Choose a term and the search engine combs through related YouTube videos for relevant insulting comments. Try dogs and cats or love and hate.

This is a basically a “search engine for insults.” Type in a search term, and it’ll give you insults you can use against a person who doesn’t like that term.

For example, enter “the godfather,” and it’ll give you “You sleep with the fishes,” “You sleeps with horsehead in bed” and “You will get an offer you can’t refuse.” Enter “alfred hitchcock” and it’ll say “You had your eyes plucked out by crows” and “You have Vertigo.” Enter “mario brothers” and it’ll say “You aren’t Super enough for Mario,” “You can’t beat world 1-1″ and “You are bowser.” You get the idea.

It finds stuff only about 50% of the time, but it works surprisingly well when it does work. Try general terms (“car”) and pop culture (“michael jordan”, “i love lucy”). Each insult includes a link to its source YouTube video.

Trippy is a new social travel web service and iPhone app that lets users call on their friends for travel planning advice and recommendations. The app works with social networks like Facebook to determine which friends may have been to the travel destination already, and those friends can then make recommendations for where to go and what to do. Adam Lisagor (Lonely Sandwich) created a wonderful launch video for the app. Trippy was founded by J. R. Johnson and launched at TechCrunch Disrupt in September.

Trippy ties into social sites like Facebook to find your friends who know about where you’re traveling to (those who have checked in, live, work, or go to school there) and who already know your personal details (like if you’re vegan, have toddlers, or a penchant for pinot). Makes good sense, eh? Tapping into the travel experiences of your friends is a whole lot more valuable than getting questionable info from random strangers.

Amen is a service that lets you make statements about the best and worst people, places and things in life and then see if your followers and friends agree.

Amen is for all of those times you think to yourself, “Man, this is the BEST! (or WORST!)”. On Amen, your friends or followers are part of that experience. They can agree with an emphatic, “Amen” or disagree with a, ‘Hell No!”, then post their own response. An Amen counts as a vote up and a Hell No! aggregates opinions into Scorecards – so you can see how your response ranks next to the crowd.

Back in April the social bookmarking service Delicious was acquired from Yahoo by YouTube founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen as part of their new company AVOS. Today they have relaunched a new and improved Delicious, that includes a new Stacks feature, which they describe as “Playlists for the Web”. Here’s Laughing Squid on Delicious.

A stack is a collection of links built around a common theme. To get started, visit the stack tab on your profile page and click “create stack.” Choose at least three links, add juicy descriptions, pick the best images, choose the layout, and shuffle the order of links. When you’re all set, click publish to share your Delicious stack.

The Allee Willis Museum of Kitsch (AWMoK) is an online community place where lovers of Kitsch, affectionately named aKitschionados, come together to share their “own prized Kitsch”. Curator of this online museum, Allee Willis, was a very early adopter of the internet and created one of the earliest social media outlets, willisville, partnered with award-winning creative visualist Prudence Fenton. Combining her own extensive real-life collections with a social media outlet, she created AWMoK to bring together other like-minded folks and to create the world’s largest documented collection of kitsch. Kitsch lovers can register to become part of the aKitschionado community at AWMoK and begin showing off treasured artifacts.

Today marks the anniversary that the Allee Willis Museum of Kitsch opened two years ago, not coincidentally on September 21, 2009. One of the many hit songs by Allee, September, for funk band Earth, Wind and Fire starts “Do you remember…the 21st night of September?”.

Amazingly accomplished, Allee is “a Grammy winning songwriter (September, Boogie Wonderland, Neutron Dance, What Have I Done To Deserve This, the Friends theme), a Grammy, Tony and Emmy nominated composer (The Color Purple musical), and award winning artist, graphic designer, set designer, interactive multimedia artist”. She has also addressed Congress on copyright laws, spoken at Harvard University, is known for hosting amazing theme parties, discovered the musical group The Del Rubio Triplets (plus so much more) and is connected to nearly every pop culture celebrity in existence.

A big fan of kitsch myself, I was introduced to AWMoK and Allee herself, earlier this year when I hosted a “For the Love of Kitsch” party at my home and I’ve since become active in the aKitschionado community. A month ago, I was invited to visit Allee’s home, Willis Wonderland, for a pre-Fluff Festival aKitschionado gathering. I not only got to see her absolutely incredible real-life kitschy collections but I also got to make a Fluffernutter cake in her kitchen (with some help from Cherpumple inventor, Charles Phoenix). I also got to see Allee’s own beautiful Celebrity JunkDrawers mosaic portrait by Jason Mecier up close.

On October 18, 2011, Allee will take the stage for the first time since 1974 in a live show, Allee Willis’ Soup to Nuts Party Mix, at the El Portal Theatre in North Hollywood, California starting at 7 PM. The evening promises songs, stories, party games, prizes and junk food.

Chalk Party is a collaborative art website where users can draw together on a giant community canvas. Founder Aaron Tovi is financing development of the site on Kickstarter.

A Chalk Party is what happens when billions of internet-connected people can draw together in the most massively collaborative ongoing art project that we can think of. As you contribute, you unlock the opportunity to draw with Chalk Party’s best Partiers.

Canvas is a new image sharing site by 4chan founder Christopher Poole. Users can share and remix images and vote for their favorites. The site is a gated community compared to 4chan’s Wild West, with a code of conduct that bans adult content, and login via Facebook. Ryan Kim of GigaOM has posted good overview of Canvas.

Canvas is a place to share and play with images. Explore new content created by other users, vote on your favorites, and even make your own image remixes with the in-browser editor.

CLOO is an iPhone app that allows people to rent their private bathrooms to their friends for a small fee (video). The app is a concept by Hillary Young and Deanna McDonald (it’s unclear if they actually plan to develop it).

CLOO’ is a community of registered users who choose to share their bathrooms and make city-living easier, while earning a small profit. Using social media connections, CLOO’ shows what friends you have in common with the host, turning a stranger’s loo into a friend of a friend’s loo.

Munich-based “computational artisan”, Mario Klingemann, created the interactive piece Like This based on Facebook’s well-known Like button.

It is not connected to Facebook since for obvious reasons it is not possible to register a “like” for another person without being logged in. Only the button design has been borrowed since it is such a cultural icon already and most people will immediately understand how to use it. Technically it contains an Arduino which takes care for permanently storing the count of button presses (so they do not get lost when the power is detached) and which also controls the display. Also what cannot be seen on the still photo is that you have to press the button for about a second during which a progress bar appears in order for your “Like” to count – so people who do not like it but still want to touch it can do so. The idea was to create a self-referential artwork that shows how many people like it. Apart from that I find it interesting to have an object in a gallery or show that is not only allowed to be touched but actually supposed to be.

It will be shown at the Ultra Social exhibition at the Urban Arts and Media Organization (UAMO) Festival 2011 in Munich from October 27-30, 2011.
