We hear about them often; there is visibility in our culture when it comes to soldier casualties in Iraq, but civilian casualties remain largely invisible — in the media at least, but not in life. Iraqi performance artist Wafaa Bilal is planning to literally turn his body into a permanent work that will have him making these casualties painfully visible, and he will carry the legacy of civilian deaths in Iraq with him the rest of his life. In effect, Bilal already does this, having lost his brother to a checkpoint missile in 2004. Starting at 8pm on March 8th at The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts in NYC, Bilal will begin the first 24 hours of …and Counting, where he will get tattooed for each American and Iraqi civilian casualty, film the process, and is endeavoring to livestream the performance. Bilal’s artist statement reads:

…and Counting addresses this double standard as Bilal turns his own body – in a 24-hour live performance — into a canvas, his back tattooed with a borderless map of Iraq covered with one dot for each Iraqi and American casualty near the cities where they fell. The 5,000 dead American soldiers are represented by red dots (permanent visible ink), and the 100,000 Iraqi casualties are represented by dots of green UV ink, seemingly invisible unless under black light. During the performance people from all walks of life read off the names of the dead.

Also, Bilal is asking each visitor to donate $1 which will go to the group Rally for Iraq, to fund scholarships for Americans and Iraqis who lost parents in the war. Based on official numbers of casualties, one dollar for each would mean $105,000 in scholarship money.

Musician, comic book artist & jewelry designer Star St.Germain writes about her friend Gabrielle Bouliane, a slam poet and videographer who died earlier this month.

She was a visionary, a friend, and a force of nature. I wish I had known her better. I did this illustration of her because most of the pictures I’ve been seeing of her in other posts of this sort didn’t really capture her the way I knew her. To me, Gabrielle will always be in bunny ears – or a cowboy hat. She is peering at me from behind a camera, or through a LiveJournal icon. She is capturing something – when everyone else is too busy watching.

Star closes with a poem of Gabrielle’s entitled “When you hear that I have died, think of this.” It is passionate and inspiring, honest and human. It challenges the reader to “graffiti [their] life on the eyes of the hungry.” Star thinks that everyone should read it, whether they knew Gabrielle or not.

I agree.

For one night only on February 23rd at The Dark Room in San Francisco Spy Emerson presents a very special installment of her ongoing performance project consisting of “anthropomorphic animals simply translating twisted human experiences”. Based on a real happening, “Happy Forever: The Life and Death of an Italian Cat” is a fictional play about the unofficial mascot of The Swimming Cities of Serenissima, and features original poetry by famed artist, orator and oracle, Dr. Hal Robins.

A cat lives a simple life on a rural canal not far from Venice. She is a witness to loneliness, and realizes her own existence just before her own death. The cat’s dead body then has an adventure of it’s own, as told by Hal Robins in his poem “Gatto Morto”.

All proceeds from the show go to support Spy’s upcoming New York performance tour.

Motherboard recently visited friends at The Madagascar Institute in Brooklyn taking a really great inside look at their “homebrewed rocket science for the streets”.

Their nearly impossible sculptures and amusements, live performances, and guerrilla events (think Flaming Soccer, Jet Blenders, Zombie Freak Outs, Death Rattlers, Condiment Wars, Electrified See-Saws, and so on) aren’t created for the turtlenecked contemplation of the museum. They thrive on the big, messy, and inspiring public engagement of the carnival, of the parade, of those moments that slack jaws and get people jumping up and down—and sometimes running for safety. It’s the kind of art that could kill you. But if it’s just bleeding and it’s not from an artery, says co-founder Chris Hackett, then you can’t really complain about it.

The doctors are saying that her cancer is aggressive, however, it is currently localized and they are hopeful for a full recovery.

Our friend Scot Nery, an accomplished pancake juggler, comedian and all around awesome performer, offers up 8 reasons normal people should juggle. Scot teaches juggling classes in Hollywood and has also produced a DVD on how to juggle.

Juggling is a really good exercise for life. It has a lot of the fun parts of a soul sport (working to better yourself, non-competitive activity, etc.) but isn’t dangerous — unless you’re juggling fire or pancakes or something. That’s why I want everyone to learn.

Monty Python’s timeless satirical comedy Life of Brian, which when released in 1979 stirred religious fanatics everywhere to protest and ban the film as blasphemous (Aberystwyth, Wales finally lifted their ban this year).

Now 30 years later, you can witness the blasphemy of a live stage adaptation of Life of Brian when it opens Friday for a 4 week stint at the Dark Room Theater in the Mission. The production runs every Friday and Saturdays nights at 8pm from November 27th to December 19th.

I recently ran into Laughing Squid’s own guest blogger mikl-em rehearsing his lines outside the theater. He gave me a quick tour of the chaos going on inside where I found half-naked performers in a costuming frenzy of robes and sandals. You’ll have to come see for yourself whether mikl’s a Roman, a messiah, a heretic or all the above.

The Dark Room is a 50 seat black box theater, busily alternating between stand-up and sketch comedy shows, big production stage adaptations of pop-culture classics like this one and of course, the infamous Sunday night Bad Movie Night.

In April our friend the amazing artist Tom Kennedy died in a tragic downing accident at Ocean Beach in San Francisco. The Ripper Journey Foundation has been established in his memory and a three-part art auction fundraiser will take place from October 28th through November 12th at the Jellyfish Gallery in San Francisco.

Friends and family of the legendary San Francisco artist Tom Kennedy will host a three-part benefit and art auction to benefit the Ripper Journey Foundation beginning October 28 and running through November 12 at the Jellyfish Gallery in San Francisco. The public is invited to participate and attend free of charge.

Tom Kennedy passed away April 12, 2009 while body-surfing off Ocean Beach in San Francisco. He left behind a legacy as a pioneering sculptural artist, social agitator and builder of more than twenty art cars. As a founding member of the art car movement, his works of art work evolved into symbols of political protest and peace keeping. Tom envisioned his beloved and most recognized art car, Ripper the Friendly Shark, traveling around the world with a crew called the Friend Patrol. Together they would inspire and support friendship and peace in conflict zones where people perceived as enemies live and work together. The art auction will raise money to send Ripper the Friendly Shark on this mission at least once a year.

The three-part fundraiser will kick off on October 28 with a silent auction and live performances and wrap up on November 12 with a live auction. An ever-growing list of artists have donated artwork to be auctioned with all proceeds to benefit the Ripper Journey Foundation.

Featured artists include Tom Kennedy, Haideen Anderson, Margot Duane, Karen Cusolito, Michael Christian, Brian Goggin, Dan Das Mann, Jon Alloway and Kal Spelletich.

The event will also showcase photos, art and videos about Tom Kennedy and the Ripper Journey Foundation created in his memory. All pieces in the silent auction will also be online at tomkennedyart.com.

We’re absolutely sure that with the aid of super-futuristic technology that we know is being invented right now, sex in the future will be more amazing than our Cylon-Cylon (plus Replicant, plus Cameron/T9) fantasies could imagine. I mean, I just get stuck thinking of two Summer Glau’s kissing. But until then, and barring Chinese manufacturing of a cheap entry-level priced Peep Show Holodeck (patent pending), we have the annual international sex and technology festival Arse Elektronika.

This year’s theme “Of Intercourse and Intracourse” promises to be a buffet of futuristic and fantastic sexual innovations, artistic explorations, and virtual hallucinations of the sci-fi-meets-pr0n kind. The thing is, it’s in just two weeks and with poeple flying in from all over the world to participate, there are a lot of talks and happenings to choose from. Starting October 1 to the 4th, events will be at various San Francisco locations including Roxie Theater, Center for Sex and Culture, Noisebridge, Femina Potens Gallery, and PariSoMa.

Don’t have time to sift the schedule to find out where to see the hot robot sex action? Here are recommended highlights:

* Thursday, October 1 is the opening night, and we’re excited to see that Annalee Newitz will be speaking at the opening gala. It officially starts at 6pm with an explicit film festival at the Roxie Theater in the Mission, and is followed by in-theater opening presentations that, if you’ve seen the Arse opening (and award ceremony) before, you’ll know they’re anything but dry. Also, not on the schedule is a hardware-hacked Atari Joydick showdown: male vs. female gaming parts. We’re sure this will be pretty outrageous.

* Friday, October 2 talks start at the Center for Sex and Culture at 8pm, but the one we won’t be missing is Johannes Grenzfurthner’s “Dating Yog-Sothoth and Fucking a Zombie.” If you’ve seen his presentations, you know he’s — rather unpredictable. The talk’s description is only, “Bizarre Sci-Fi and Fantasy in Graphic Novels. No spoilers.” Enough said.

* Saturday, October 3 is the Big Fat Future Sex Day, with talks going from 11:30am to 9pm at ParisSoMa, then a not-to-be-missed (though limited capacity) evening gala at frisky erotic art gallery Femina Potens, starting at 10pm. Daytime talk highlights include “Sex Without Meat: How Singularitarians View Sex” by R.U. Sirius, “Will You Still Love Me Like This In The Year 2300?” by Annalee Newitz, and “Biometrics in the Bedroom” by Kyle Machulis (AKA qDot). The nighttime future sex fiesta includes a bizarre installation of DIY porn tools, plus a six-piece musical act that fits the theme while putting the flesh into all this hypothetical sex. This is the party, replicants.

* Sunday October 4 is the hackfest: at hacker space Noisebridge, sex hackers will demo how to create a Joydick (and other sex/gaming hybrids), you can learn how to make your own ’steampunk’ vibrator from the expert, the Thrillhammer’s Allen Stein will show you genital-based haptic devices and much more.

We’ll see you there. Just don’t get your dangly bits too close to the moving parts. Unless that’s your fetish.

Folks, the rumors are true. There’s a new gallery in San Francisco’s Mission District disguised as a comics shop. Mission: Comics and Art had their grand-opening party on Saturday night. And so, like a moth to a flame, I was drawn to the rock-and-roll sounds radiating from the corner of 20th and San Carlos.

It’s an understated and remarkably large space, offering plenty of room for the exhibited artwork and well-stocked selection of graphic novels. At the opening, all five members of Genevapop had ample room to rock while the crowd mingled and danced.

Mission: Comics and Art aspires to be a junction point for the worlds of fine art, comics, and popular culture. The artwork exhibited included new works from local artists like Audrey Welch, Betsy Lam, Chris Conroy, Matt Delight, Meredith Scheff-King, telephoneandsoup, and W.A.M. – Women’s Art Movement.

Here’s a wondeful mini documentary by Marilyn Agrelo about the Moscow Cat Theater, run by Vladimir and his daughter Maria.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more unusual circus, or father-daughter performing duo. The Moscow Cat Theatre is just that: a travelling show of cats that perform amazing tricks for the owners who love and train them. Everybody in Russia may be used to seeing cats perform tricks, as the theatre’s manager explains in this funny, charming film, but felines walking tightropes, crossing the stage on giant balls and walking upside down is not a common sight in most countries. As balalaika and accordion circus score plays in the background, Creative Director Vladimir and daughter Maria combine their love of cats and stage to create a captivating act and illustrate the tricks of the trade – giving new meaning to the expression ‘herding cats’.

VBS.TV Motherboard produced a really great episode featuring Australian performance artist Stelarc whose work involves extending the human body through technology.

Stelarc is a Greek weirdo who lives in Australia and uses medical equipment, prosthetic limbs, electrodes, virtual-reality systems, endoscopy, and crazy cyborgian human-internet connections to produce shows that fuses the lines between art, performance art, body art, and some kind of futuristic Skinny Puppy electronics trade fair. RIght now he’s setting up a big retrospective in Paris with artifacts and clips of all all his old favorites: Virtual Arm, Stimbod, Stomach Sculpture.

Socyberty has a great write-up on Royale De Luxe returning to Nantes, France for Estuaire 2009 with a giant man in a diving suit searching for his niece in their installation “La Géante du Titanic et le Scaphandrie” (“The Titanic Giantess and the Underwater Worker”). misterstf has some are more photos of the installation.

Nantes, the home town of Jules Verne, is situated in western France. Here, near the river Loire a giant deep-sea diver sleeps gently, waiting for his task to begin. Sadness marks his face even as he sleeps. He has been searching the world over for his missing niece and although he may not know it, the end of his search is coming. The diver or scaphandrier as he is known in French will be paraded through the streets of this historic city at the beginning of the Estuary 2009 arts festival. The biannual festival gives the French mechanical marionette street theater company Royale de Luxe the opportunity to unveil their latest creation.
