“A Muppet Wicker Man” by British artist Paul O’Connell is a Muppet comic version of the cult British horror film The Wicker Man (1973).

Two brothers, Andrew and Nathan McMurry of andrewmfilms, have created Psycho Siri, a short horror film about an iPhone gone bad. The film makes Siri, the voice of the iPhone’s virtual assistant, the villain in this action-packed short filled with special effects.

“Pingu’s THE THING” is a twisted claymation mashup of John Carpenter’s The Thing, and Pingu, a claymation children’s show about penguins. The short claymation is by Lee Hardcastle (making-of video).

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale is a 2010 film about the “real” Santa Claus: an ancient, super-powered, child-eating sonuvabitch. This Finnish film, written and directed by Jalmari Helander and starring the adorable child actor Onni Tommila. Rare Exports is classed as a horror film, but it’s more a dark, scary Grimms’ Fairy Tale than a Hollywood holiday-themed slasher film. And it has a cutting comic edge as well.

Set in Lapland and incorporating various traditional pagan legends of Santa this feature film was preceded by a pair of internet-released short films which we posted here three years ago.

If that’s not enough, Roger Ebert gave it 3.5 out of 4 stars while comparing Rare Exports to both The Thing and A Christmas Story. I’d also recommend it for fans of equally off-beat Korean monster movie The Host.

Model Heidi Klum, already known for over-the-top Halloween costumes, donned a custom skintight, and quite gory, skinned dead body (ala “Visible Woman”) costume to the 12th Heidi Klum’s Annual Halloween party which she hosted at the The Venetian Resort’s TAO Nightclub in Las Vegas. For ‘authenticity’, she made her grand entrance by being wheeled in on an autopsy table by two bloody ‘medical professionals’. The macabre ‘body’suit was created by costume designer Martin Izquierdo.

The Gawper is a fun little animated short film created by the folks at A Large Evil Corporation that is reminiscent of the early horror flicks it pays homage to, such as Frankenstein and Dracula. The film was directed by Seth Watkins.

Stained glass pop artists, Mark Bloom and Maggie Rickard of Velvet Glass, handcrafted this series of Classic Monster Mosaics based on the horror films of the 1930s. Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Mummy, Dracula, and The Wolfman are all beautifully represented in monochromatic black-and-white stained glass mosaics.

For Halloween, California-based Psycho Donuts has made a Friday the 13th inspired donut in the powdery likeness of serial killer Jason Voorhees’ murder mask. It is a chocolate-raised donut filled with raspberry ‘blood’ and is topped with powdered sugar.

The Art of Bleeding will present their “magic ambulance theater” show titled Halloween Highway 2, at the Steve Allen Theater on October 28, 29 and 30, 2011 starting at 8 PM each evening. The Sunday performance will feature female blood wrestling. It promises to be “a ghoulish carnival of entertaining catastrophes” and hosts an impressive entertainment lineup. The Cute & Creepy art exhibition at the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts in Tallahassee simultaneously explores adorable and twisted. 25 artists are represented at the exhibition including Chris Mars, Laurie Lipton, Jon Beinart, Elizabeth McGrath, Kathie Olivas, Ray Caesar and many more. The show is curated by artist and educator Carrie Ann Baade and runs from October 14 to November 20, 2011.

To see beauty in the carnivalesque or macabre, in freaks and in monsters, is a matter of aesthetics. Most of us can agree on the artistic value of a Monet or Titian but this work is for a daring audience, an audience open to exploring the strange beauty and the ecstasy inherent in our culture’s aversions.

There is something that makes us uneasy when confronted by the weird or the unusual. Those who can appreciate both have come to anticipate and enjoy unexpected sensations. Work of this nature is not going to be an underground movement any longer: the grotesque is going mainstream.

The Zombie Research Society has released a book for mature children titled That’s Not Your Mommy Anymore, A Zombie Tale. Zombie Research Society’s Founder Matt Mogk authored the book to teach “children how to recognize a zombie outbreak and take steps to protect themselves”. The book is told through colorful illustrations by Aja Wells.

T is for Toilet is the super gory claymation film entry for Alamo Drafthouse’s contest, THE ABCs OF DEATH, from director and animator Lee Hardcastle.

THE ABCs OF DEATH is “a twenty-six chapter anthology feature that showcases death letter by letter” and the coveted final letter “T” is up for grabs for the winning 26th director, as is $5000. Hardcastle’s T is for Toilet definitely has the “Holy Shit” factor that the contest is looking for and the “humorous irony” of teaching the young with fear of punishment which inspired the contest from the beginning. Voting ends on Halloween 2011.

A helpful warning: Parents, don’t show this animated horror short to your potty training kiddo, unless you want to be changing diapers until they’re thirty years old.

Andrew Barr of Canada’s newspaper National Post collaborated with illustrator Mike Faille to tally up the carnage from antagonist Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th slasher film polylogy which began in the 1980s. This amazing graphic depicts every which way a character has kicked the bucket in the hands of uber-bad-guy hockey-masked Jason, from strangulation to machete-induced fatal amputation to well, see for yourself in the full version.

The Jung van Matt/Elbe ad agency for German horror TV channel, 13th Street, created severed zombie head bowling balls with spraygun artist Oliver Paaß as a promotion for the horror channel. These logo-ed “bowlingheads” were then swapped with regular bowling balls secretly in several German bowling alleys and documented a la Candid Camera style. Local bowlers got a big surprise as they prepared to bowl when the horrific balls were surreptitiously fed through the alley’s ball return system.

These gory bowling balls would be just the thing to use next time you take the “skinheads” bowling.
