Writer and illustrator Rich Burlew has been writing The Order of the Stick, a comedic webcomic about D&D-style roleplaying games and medieval fantasy, for nearly 10 years. In addition to the online versions, Burlew has been self-publishing hard copy compilations for his fans. The third and largest anthology went out of print in 2010, so Burlew is turning to Kickstarter to raise funds for a second printing. As of this writing, he has raised $393,807, making his fundraiser one of the top 10 highest funded Kickstarter projects to date, and notably, the only book project in the top 10.

YouTuber crysknife007 has isolated the ambient engine hum of the Starship Enterprise as heard in Star Trek: The Next Generation. The sound is looped repeatedly into a 24 hour long YouTube movie.

One of my favorite things about the Star Trek franchise are all the great ambient sounds that represent the engine noise on the various ships. My favorite ambient noise from the whole series is the engine idling noise in TNG. I have cleaned up a sample from the show and then looped it for 24 hours. Great for ambiance and imagining that you’re in deep space.

The “2012 Time Travel Calendar” by graphic designer Alex Griendling is a wall calendar that lists 2.6 billion years of notable time travel events from movies, TV shows, comics, and videogames. Griendling is raising funds for the project on Kickstarter.

There are 97 different properties in the calendar. Each one has a unique icon that represents it. Some of these only show up once (Calvin and Hobbes, I’m looking at you), while others show up multiple times (Star Trek, anyone?). All together, there are 155 instances of time travel. Aside from learning about time travel movies you’ve never heard of, it’s always fun to see properties you’re familiar with line up with each other. Did you know that while Marty was saving Doc Brown from Mad Dog Tannen in 1885, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were battling Leatherhead aboard a speeding train? Now you do.

What do Amy Poehler, Bjork, Felicia Day, Martha Stewart, Miranda July, and Zooey Deschanel have in common? They’re just a few of the amazing women proving that “geek” is no longer a four-letter word.

In recent years, male geeks have taken the world by storm. But what about their female counterparts? After all, fangirls are just like fanboys—they put on their Imperial Stormtrooper Lycra pants one leg at a time.

Geek Girls Unite is a call to arms for every girl who has ever obsessed over music, comics, film, comedy, books, crafts, fashion, or anything else under the Death Star. Music geek girl Leslie Simon offers an overview of the geek elite by covering groundbreaking women, hall-of-famers, ultimate love matches, and potential frenemies, along with her top picks for playlists, books, movies, and websites. This smart and hilarious tour through girl geekdom is a must-have for any woman who has ever wondered where her sassy rebel sisters have been hiding.

Co-founder and Director of Brooklyn’s mechanical art “combine”, Madagascar Institute, “survivalist savant” Chris Hackett is returning to the Science Channel on August 18, 2011 at 10:30 PM with his television show, Stuck with Hackett. Viewers got an early sneak peek at the show in December 2010 during a Science Channel “special look at 2011″ programming week.

Presented as what happens “when MacGyver meets Survivorman“, Hackett searches out ‘obtanium’, his word for precious discarded junk, in a variety of places this season according to the show’s episode guide. These places include an abandoned hospital, an aviation junkyard, a grocery store dumpster and a plethora of other potentially unsavory locales.

Hackett has started blogging about his thoughts on the TV series, the inspiration for his craft and really, allowing his audience the chance to get to know him a little better in his own words at Stuck With Hackett. The Science Channel has even created a digital puzzle in his likeness.

Stuck with Hackett features “alternative engineer” and survival expert Chris Hackett. Each episode finds Hackett left alone in an extreme environment — from deep wilderness, to ruined cities, to arid deserts — with little more than his wits and ingenuity. The goal isn’t survival, however; it’s luxury…achieved by any means necessary.

Aren’t you glad you’re still here to stitch this pattern?

Julie Jackson, the creative brain behind Kitty Wigs has another equally-as-amusing venture called Subversive Cross Stitch, which may best be described as “not your grandmother’s cross-stitch.” She takes the quaint embroidery craft of cross-stitching and turns it into something both highly amusing and well, subversive. Jackson, also a freelance monthly columnist for CRAFT, has a book on the subject published, Subversive Cross Stitch: 33 Designs for Your Surly Side. While she has been successfully doing this schtick for a while, some of her newer designs are worth noting like QR codes riddled with profane messages that actually read when scanned and those inspired by internet memes.

Most of her patterns can be downloaded as pdfs for “instant gratification.”

Etsy vendor and Statistician, Nicole Dick of Nausicaa Distribution has taken her passion for statistics to a very nerdy level with her Statistical Distribution Plushies. And as if that wasn’t geeky enough, she used the open source program R to create the pattern for them.
