“Proposition One” is a photo series in which analog cameras, record players, and other obsolete gadgets are depicted in ghostly X-ray-style images. Spanish photographer Max de Esteban created the images not with an X-ray, but by disassembling the devices, painting them white, and taking many photographs as he reassembled the devices piece by piece. The final image is a photographic composite of many layers of the device.

The series of images have an x-ray, mortuary quality; as forensic testimonies of a past existence; vestiges of their inner structure can be clearly identified while others fade or have disappeared as in decomposing organic bodies. By eliminating the objects’ individual peculiarities, each photograph becomes a generic symbol of decay and death. While sophisticated and state-of-the-art not long ago, these tools evoke today a sense of fragility, archaism and trauma.

Nest is a self-programming thermostat that learns the schedules and temperature preferences of its owners in order to save energy. It can also be controlled remotely by smartphone.

As the Nest intro video points out, currently 50% of home energy bills go to heating and cooling, or put another way, 10% of US Energy is controlled by thermostats. Nest is produced by Nest Labs, a company founded by two Apple alums: Tony Fadell, former head of the iPod and iPhone division, and Matt Rogers, former head of iPod software development.

Wired has a fascinating article on how the Nest project came together.

What if your thermostat could learn from you?
What if it could build a schedule around what you like? Or figure out when you’re gone? Or show you how long it’ll take to warm up the house? What if your thermostat told you how much energy it used? And helped you to save even more? What if you could control it from your laptop and phone?
That would change everything.

Red Pop is an attachment for iPhone that brings the speed and enjoyment of a shutter release button to the phone’s camera function. UK design firm Beep Industries is currently developing Red Pop for commercial release, and raising funds for the project on Kickstarter.

We are huge iPhone fans and love the iPhoneography culture that has grown around the product – so much so that, like many others, we’ve stopped carrying our digital cameras with us and now use our iPhones to capture and share photos of our everyday lives as well as big events like birthdays, bake-offs and baby Joe-Joe’s first steps.

However, the experience of using a camera phone isn’t perfect. It feels like something’s missing from the photo taking experience and it’s frustrating that shots are missed when you have to play ‘hunt the fire button’. In our experience, and from what people we have told us, this is a real frustration of taking photos on the otherwise awesome iPhone 4.

So we had an idea – let’s bring the button back! To us, buttons are beautiful, an invitation that screams out ‘c’mon press me’. Red Pop’s design is rooted in the now but with a subtle and respectful nod to the beautiful and iconic cameras of the past.

My name’s Gustavo Pastre and have been an artist/craftsman my entire life. I endeavor to craft items of enduring quality.
We all know getting older isn’t fun, but Koken, a Japanese manufacturer of training gear for medical professionals, wants to be sure you know the specific details. To that end, they’ve produced this cousin to the “fatsuit,” or “empathy belly,” a little bondage ensemble they not-so-idiomatically have dubbed “The Aged Simulation Set.” Not sure where the Bib of Shame or orange-and-green color scheme comes in, but then seniors aren’t known for their fashion sense.

The aged simulation set is a teaching material intended to demonstrate the inconveniences felt by the aged due to musculoskeletal, visual and auditory aging. This set is the most suitable for medical practice, nursing and welfare training. Inconveniences to the aged due to the changes in bones, muscles, sight and hearing can be experienced with this simulation set. This simulation set is suitable for the field of medical and welfare education.
