Cosmonaut by Studio Neat is a capacitive, wide-grip stylus for touchscreen devices (video).

The Cosmonaut was born out of our desire to have a really great stylus for our iPads. Hövding is an inflatable bicycle helmet hidden in a collar that is worn around the neck. Much like an automobile airbag, it only inflates in the event of an accident. It also features interchangeable covers to help it match the style of the wearer. To see how it works, watch these crash tests (bicycle vs. auto & bicyclist flipping over bike handlebars). Hovding is by Swedish designers Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin. It is currently only available in Europe.

Brydge is a combination keyboard and case for iPad that when attached, converts the tablet into a laptop (video). It is made of machined aluminum and attaches to the iPad with a special quick release hinge. Brydge is by Los Angeles-based designer Brad Leong, Sam, & Eddy. They are raising funds for the project on Kickstarter.

The Injured Personnel Carrier (IPC) is backpack-style system that allows a rescuer to carry an injured person on the rescuer’s back (video). The IPC is designed by Israeli tactical gear company Agilite.

Canon has announced the new EOS 5D Mark III digital SLR camera, which succeeds the EOS 5D Mark II. Omniscient Siri by SaGa Design is an iPhone case inspired by Apple’s Siri digital assistant. The case won the 3D design category in a competition to determine what Siri looks like, hosted by rapid manufacturing website Shapeways.

“Proposition One” is a photo series in which analog cameras, record players, and other obsolete gadgets are depicted in ghostly X-ray-style images. Spanish photographer Max de Esteban created the images not with an X-ray, but by disassembling the devices, painting them white, and taking many photographs as he reassembled the devices piece by piece. The final image is a photographic composite of many layers of the device.

The series of images have an x-ray, mortuary quality; as forensic testimonies of a past existence; vestiges of their inner structure can be clearly identified while others fade or have disappeared as in decomposing organic bodies. By eliminating the objects’ individual peculiarities, each photograph becomes a generic symbol of decay and death. While sophisticated and state-of-the-art not long ago, these tools evoke today a sense of fragility, archaism and trauma.

“Proposition One” is on exhibition at the Klompching Gallery in Brooklyn through December 9.

Iris 9000 by ThinkGeek is a retro futuristic speakerphone dock for the iPhone 4S and its Siri voice assistant inspired by the power hungry AI computer HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey. It allows an iPhone 4S owner to speak to Siri from up to 50 feet away. Iris 9000 will be available in April, 2012.

Nest is a self-programming thermostat that learns the schedules and temperature preferences of its owners in order to save energy. It can also be controlled remotely by smartphone.

As the Nest intro video points out, currently 50% of home energy bills go to heating and cooling, or put another way, 10% of US Energy is controlled by thermostats. Nest is produced by Nest Labs, a company founded by two Apple alums: Tony Fadell, former head of the iPod and iPhone division, and Matt Rogers, former head of iPod software development.
