Salt Made From Tears is a line of flavored salts that supposedly are made from human tears. The salts are sold by Hoxton Street Monster Supplies in London. The store is part of the Ministry of Stories, a children’s writing center. Salt Made From Tears was developed by Studio Weave, Halen Môn, and We Made This.

The salt is collected from humans experiencing a range of emotions, and in various situations. You can pick up salt made from: tears of sorrow, tears shed while sneezing, tears shed while chopping onions, tears of laughter, and tears of anger. Each has a distinctly different flavour – salt made from tears of sorrow has a delicate lavender flavour, perfect for seasoning limbs and organs.

French food artist and filmmaker Alexandre DUBOSC has created an amazing animated zoetrope cake inspired by Tim Burton. It is titled The Caketrope of BURTON’s Team and it incorporates elements from some of Burton’s films, including The Nightmare Before Christmas and Batman. You may remember DUBOSC created Alimation, another edible zoetrope animation. DUBOSC has posted a set of the film’s “making of” photos that are worth checking out.

Fucked in Park Slope has posted scans of a fake menu one of their readers received while leaving Brooklyn’s The Great GoogaMooga festival. The menu is for a non-existent restaurant called Fuds which features such trendy treats as “Facebook Fries”, “Panty Slaw”, and “Two-bean dickbread wrap”. “Garnick Mushed Malonies” can be washed down with some “Yankee Poison” or even a pint of “Chocolate Crap Porterboy”. Of course, no Fuds meal would be complete without “Sweet pork smear and tin whistle cakes”. The parody menu was created by Dan Klein, Kelly Hudson, and Arthur Meyer and it sounds like a couple more menu pages will be posted soon. According to Hudson, they handed out a few thousand at last weekend’s festival.

NoHo Design District commissioned Chicago-based design studio ODL (Object Design League) to create Balloon Factory, a meat balloon window installation for Japan Premium Beef in New York City. These balloons were handmade by Steven Haulenbeek, Caroline Linder, Michael Savona, and Lisa Smith. The installation was curated by Sight Unseen and was on display May 18 to 21, 2012. Randomly chosen meat balloons can be purchased online for a limited time. See the entire image gallery of the installation at ODL’s Flickr page.

A selection of uninflated steak balloons were displayed on butcher trays, framed by an installation of hanging sausage balloon links. This iteration extends the original Balloon Factory project and carries a strong reference to the intricate fake food prevalent in restaurant windows in Japan.

Foodbeast is reporting that fast food chain Carl’s Jr. is testing out a new product called the Ice Cream Brrrger in Orange County, California. The Brrrger is a burger-shaped ice cream novelty consisting of chocolate ice cream and “condiments” sandwiched between two sugar cookies.

Happy Food, a wonderful new animated short by Yum Yum London, with audio by David Kamp.

Stef of Cupcake Project has concocted the Cupcakewurst, a recipe for sweet chocolate cake-filled sausages. She added cupcake batter to sausage casing, grilled one up, put it on top of a long doughnut and then drizzled raspberry sauce (the “ketchup”) to make it look like a meat treat.

Brock Davis cheered up his grumpy kids at breakfast by making a Banana Peel Trucker Hat for a banana to wear.

Brock describes how to made it:

1 or 2 bananas. One to make the hat, one to model the hat. This could also be made using one banana. Carve the shape of the hat using an x-acto knife. Leave one of the banana peel sides longer, to make the rim of the hat. Most bananas come with a little sticker. Use this sticker to serve as the logo on the hat, if you want your hat to have a logo.

Simple project, takes about 5 minutes yet the memories will last a lifetime.

The Jelly Shot Test Kitchen has posted recipes for Waffle Jelly Shots, gelatin-based breakfast cocktail shots. The first one is called Classic Waffle and contains OJ, lemon juice, maple syrup, gelatin and vodka. The other is called Blueberry Waffle and has the same ingredients as the Classic but adds blueberry preserves. To make them look like cute tiny waffles, they used a Wilton Ice Cream Sandwich pan.

Supermarket chain H-E-B uses a Texas-sized hot rod shopping cart to promote its brand at parades and other events. A waving anthropomorphic bag of groceries can be found inside the cart during some of these events. It was most recently spotted by Bonnie M. at the 2012 Cornyval parade in Helotes, Texas. The giant cart is gas-powered and can be driven like a car.

Peak Condition is a interview-style stop-motion short film by Los-Angeles based artist and animator Laura Jane Favela that is about “a delusional slice of toast and a naive but well-meaning raccoon.”

The maladjusted pair inhabit a universe in which Toast’s unusual ideas about reality reign supreme.

New York City-based artist Jennifer Rubell has created Nutcrackers, her 2011 art series of 18 life-size naked lady nutcracker sculptures. Each female mannequin is displayed sideways so that the legs can crush a nut (in this case, a Texas pecan) in the inner thigh. Take a look at one of the sculptures in action in this recent video posted by PAPER Magazine.

A statement from the artist:

…Nutcrackers consists of 18 life-size interactive sculptures of women surrounding a pedestal holding one ton of Texas pecans. Each prefabricated female mannequin is mounted on her side in an odalisque position and has been retooled to function as a nutcracker. Visitors interact with each sculpture by placing a pecan in the mannequin’s inner thigh, then pushing down the upper leg to crack open the nut so they may eat it in the gallery. Inspired by nutcrackers depicting female figures – and in particular one found on the internet of Hillary Clinton – these interactive sculptures embody the two polar stereotypes of female power: the idealized, sexualized nude female form; and the too-powerful, nut-busting überwoman. The work also serves as a prompt to action, encouraging the viewer to transgress the traditional viewer-artwork boundary and complete the work by participating in it.

Wisconsin-based Alisa Toninato FeLion Studios has created Made in America, an amazing cast iron set of art skillets shaped like the 48 contiguous states. In total, the piece weighs 550 lbs and is 9 feet wide. Individual state skillets or geographic compositions of them are available to purchase directly from the artist. In the past, we posted about Toninato’s lovely cast iron Jesus Waffle Maker.

Preppy fashion company Lilly Pulitzer has designed limited edition boxes of Nabisco brand Barnum’s Animals crackers. With Nabisco’s parent company Kraft Foods, they recently released 2 million of these signature print boxes to bring awareness to the issue of children worldwide who “can’t smile because of facial deformities.” As part of this campaign, money will be donated to Operation Smile, an international charity organization that will help these children get corrective surgeries. These signature boxes can be tracked on their Cracker Tracker map. I spotted a few of these boxes at my local Nob Hill Foods in Alameda, California.
