<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/medicalmuseum/3304269005/" title="Reeve2021 by otisarchives1, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3307/3304269005_b23429aff3.jpg" width="420" height="500" alt="Reeve2021" /></a></p>
<p>The <a href="http://nmhm.washingtondc.museum/index.html">National Museum of Health and Medicine</a> (otherwise known as the Army Medical Museum) has a <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/medicalmuseum/sets/">gorgeous Flickr stream</a> filled with enough medical curiosities, technologies, and well-documented photographs to keep the most prurient of medical anomaly junkies awake at their keyboards late into the night. </p>
<p>Says <a href="http://www.blogger.com/profile/14551914909843150387">Mike Rhode</a>, comics researcher and contributor to the Museum&#8217;s blog, the delightfully named &#8220;<a href="http://bottledmonsters.blogspot.com/">A Repository for Bottled Monsters</a>&#8220;: </p>
<blockquote><p>
I think I come off as a bit strident there, but we are creating a massive new resource and need to make it available in new ways. Most of these photographs were never described in any database (although there is a set of index cards that fills a wall) and we&#8217;re discovering and seeing them for the first time too. </p></blockquote>
<p>Such is the beauty of wide open informational networks. Unfortunately the Army seems to disagree, as they have blocked the museum&#8217;s Flickr access. The maintainers of the archive are not to be thwarted, however; <a href="http://www.flickr.com/people/medicalmuseum/">they are uploading pics from home</a>!</p>

<p>Finally! Flickr has <a href="http://blog.flickr.net/2008/12/11/improved-contacts-management/">improved how it manages contacts</a>. I&#8217;ve wanted this feature since I first started using Flickr back in early 2005.</p>
<p>The changes can be found on your <a href="http://flickr.com/people/me/contacts/">contact lists page</a>. </p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.flickr.com/people/me/contacts/rev/one-way/by-added/">one-way contacts feature</a> is especially helpful when looking for friends who made you a contact, that you might have missed. What makes it even better is that it shows their real name (if provided). The number one reason I fail to add a friends in any social network is because I don&#8217;t recognize their username.</p>
<p>Now time to start sorting though all of those missed contacts on my <a href="http://flickr.com/people/laughingsquid/">Flickr account</a>.</p>
<p>Speaking of friend management, I still think <a href="http://www.dopplr.com/">Dopplr</a> has one of the <a href="http://www.dopplr.com/account/connections">best systems</a> out there, especially their <a href="http://www.dopplr.com/account/others">&#8220;others you might know feature&#8221;</a>.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> <a href="http://seanbonner.com/">Sean Bonner</a> points out the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/seanbonner/3100609507/">sort by most public photos</a> option.</p>

<p>What was that big thing? Yesterday? Up in the sky? If you happened to look up sometime around 3 pm, you might have seen it: A twin-deck <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airbus_A380">Airbus A380</a> superjumbo airliner looping around downtown San Francisco.</p>
<p>The A380 was here as part of a promotional tour by Emirates airlines, and I managed to weasel my way aboard for a celebratory 90-minute flight to nowhere. As we cruised in the skies over Northern California, I snacked on frou-frou canapes and explored the brand-new aircraft. </p>
<p>The first class suites are amazing:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/telstar/2734776428/" title="First Class Personal Video and Beverage Stations by Telstar Logistics, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3093/2734776428_c4df86b07f.jpg" width="500" height="332" alt="First Class Personal Video and Beverage Stations" /></a></p>
<p>The first-class shower is even more amazing: </p>
<p><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/telstar/2734770980/" title="First Class Shower Room (Shower Closed) by Telstar Logistics, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3056/2734770980_96b588ec81.jpg" width="332" height="500" alt="First Class Shower Room (Shower Closed)" /></a></p>
<p>Even the economy class seats were relatively roomy, and the onboard entertainment system offered an awful lot of ways to distract yourself. News feeds. On-demand video. The words.</p>
<p>My favorite was the Tailcam, realtime video piped to each passengers&#8217; seat showing the view from the top of the A380&#8217;s vertical stabilizer. It&#8217;s basically the same view you get in many popular flight sim packages, but it&#8217;s more fun when it&#8217;s real. Here&#8217;s our landing at SFO:</p>
<p><object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="500" height="375" data="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=55430" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"><param name="flashvars" value="intl_lang=en-us&amp;photo_secret=4a96b6e56d&amp;photo_id=2734259995"></param><param name="movie" value="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=55430"></param><param name="bgcolor" value="#000000"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=55430" bgcolor="#000000" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="intl_lang=en-us&amp;photo_secret=4a96b6e56d&amp;photo_id=2734259995" height="375" width="500"></embed></object></p>
<p>There&#8217;s more nerdy technical detail abut the flight in my post over <a href="http://telstarlogistics.typepad.com/telstarlogistics/2008/08/flight-report-a.html">at Telstar Logistics</a>, and the link to more pictures is below:</p>

<p>&#8220;What do we want? Donuts! When do we want them? Now!&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/people/mroth/">Matthew Rothenberg</a>, who works for Flickr, confirms that <a href="http://www.flickr.com/groups/wedemanddonuts/discuss/72157604480415555/">they will in fact be providing donuts</a>. While you have not yet reached your goal of 20K members, we at FlickrHQ have heard of your noble efforts and seek to answer your cries for justice.</p>
<p>Save the date: Wednesday, April 16th, 11:00am at a donut shoppe TBD in downtown San Francisco. I will purchase one (1) free donut for every We Demand Donuts group member who shows up.* (*While supplies last.)</p>
<p>This is not a joke.</p>
<p>Let glazed and jelly-filled freedom ring!</p>
<p>(I sincerely apologize for those members who are not local to the SF Bay Area, but the combination of a greasy donut and a postal envelope is a very sad thing indeed, and would be an affront to Donutkind.)

<p>Flickr has just launched their long anticipated <a href="http://www.flickr.com/help/video/">video feature</a>. The announcement came in the form of a <a href="http://blog.flickr.net/2008/04/08/video-on-flickr/">puppet show</a> posted by Flickr community manager <a href="http://www.flickr.com/people/heather/">Heather Champ</a>.</p>
<p>I have been testing out Flickr video for the last couple of weeks and it seems to work pretty well and the embeded player is really nice, but one thing to keep in mind is that the videos are limited to 90 seconds with a max upload size of 150MB.</p>
<p><object type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="500" height="375" data="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=1.167" classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"><param name="flashvars" value="intl_lang=en-us&amp;photo_secret=688fe16007&amp;photo_id=2398986413"></param><param name="movie" value="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=1.167"></param><param name="bgcolor" value="#000000"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.flickr.com/apps/video/stewart.swf?v=1.167" bgcolor="#000000" allowfullscreen="true" flashvars="intl_lang=en-us&amp;photo_secret=688fe16007&amp;photo_id=2398986413" height="375" width="500"></embed></object></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laughingsquid/2398986413/">video</a> that I&#8217;ve uploaded to Flickr of last weekend at the <a href="http://laughingsquid.com/saint-stupids-day-parade-2008-photos/">Saint Stupid&#8217;s Day Parade</a>. I shot this video with my new <a href="http://www.theflip.com/products_flip_ultra.shtml">Flip Video Ultra</a> camera and edited in iMovie.</p>

<p>This is the <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/laughingsquid/2399040253/">message</a> that Flickr displays while your video is being processed.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE 1:</strong> The Flickr Video launch appears to be a soft launch and is not yet available to the public. The test videos I&#8217;ve uploaded are still showing up as private.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE 2:</strong> Ok, Flickr has just <a href="http://blog.flickr.net/en/2008/04/09/video-on-flickr-2/">announced that Flickr Video is now live</a>. I&#8217;ve uploaded another test video <a href="http://laughingsquid.com/we-have-become-content/">&#8220;We Have Become Content&#8221;</a>.</p>

Here are a few photos from tonight&#8217;s Flickr Turns 4 party at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco. I shot these with my new Ricoh GR Digital II. I&#8217;m still getting used to it, but so far it&#8217;s a really great 10-megapixal compact camera that shoots in RAW with excellent manual controls and great low-light [...]<p>This is a blog post from <a href="http://laughingsquid.com">Laughing Squid</a>, subscribe via <a href="http://feeds.laughingsquid.com/laughingsquid">RSS</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/laughing_squid">Twitter</a>, <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Laughing-Squid/6976292194">Facebook</a> & <a href="http://friendfeed.com/laughingsquid">FriendFeed</a>.</p>

I&#8217;m still getting used to it, but so far it&#8217;s a really great 10-megapixal compact camera that shoots in RAW with excellent manual controls and great low-light performance, not to mention it&#8217;s damn sexy. Special thanks to <a href="http://www.jameshome.com/">James Home</a> for the inspiration to buy one (he was <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/jameshome/sets/72157604110412015/">shooting</a> with his GR II at <a href="http://laughingsquid.com/etech-2008-photos/">ETech</a>). </p>
