Flickr has just launched People in Photos, a new feature that allows you to associate Flickr users with their image in photos. Flickr has also revamped member profiles.

We’ve launched People in Photos, a new feature that will help put a face to the Flickrverse and enable you to highlight members that you’ve photographed in a whole new way. People in Photos lets you add a member to a photo, find photos of people you know, and manage which photos you’re in. Huzzah!

Flickr has just released a new native iPhone app. The interface has improved quite a bit over Flickr’s mobile website, which was already pretty good. You can even shoot photos and upload them directly to Flickr from the app.

Flickr has just redesigned their search results page, making it easier to find and view user photos, including a popup info window with stats on each photo.

Flickr has just launched Twitter2Flickr which allows you to simultaneously upload photos and video directly to Flickr and Twitter via email. Links posted to Twitter use a special flic.kr URL shortener. I’ve been testing it out for a while and it works really well.

The National Museum of Health and Medicine (otherwise known as the Army Medical Museum) has a gorgeous Flickr stream filled with enough medical curiosities, technologies, and well-documented photographs to keep the most prurient of medical anomaly junkies awake at their keyboards late into the night.

Says Mike Rhode, comics researcher and contributor to the Museum’s blog, the delightfully named “A Repository for Bottled Monsters“:

I think I come off as a bit strident there, but we are creating a massive new resource and need to make it available in new ways. Most of these photographs were never described in any database (although there is a set of index cards that fills a wall) and we’re discovering and seeing them for the first time too.

Such is the beauty of wide open informational networks. Unfortunately the Army seems to disagree, as they have blocked the museum’s Flickr access. The maintainers of the archive are not to be thwarted, however; they are uploading pics from home!

They also made video available free members, with a two video per month limit.

A ridiculous comment thread on Flickr has been continuously evolving over the last week on the “Anger Is the Swiss Army Knife of Emotions” graphic that Mike Monteiro posted for his t-shirt that I talked him into making.

The absurdity of comments have been graphically fueled by Blingee, a web service that helps you add “bling” to photos. Feel free to make your contribution to history.

Happy 5th anniversary to Flickr, which launched on this date at ETech 2004 during the “Virtual Worlds, Distributed Interaction: Extending a MMOG with Remote Scripting, IM, Mobiles and REST” panel. Speaking of which, here’s the oldest surviving image in the Flickr database, ID #74 which was uploaded by Cal Henderson on December 15, 2003.

I Hardly Know Her is an super simplified interface for Flickr that displays your photostream with minimal distractions, showing just the photos, with additional information when you hover over the image. Here’s what my photostream looks like.

Finally! Flickr has improved how it manages contacts. I’ve wanted this feature since I first started using Flickr back in early 2005.

The changes can be found on your contact lists page.

The one-way contacts feature is especially helpful when looking for friends who made you a contact, that you might have missed. What makes it even better is that it shows their real name (if provided). The number one reason I fail to add a friends in any social network is because I don’t recognize their username.

Now time to start sorting though all of those missed contacts on my Flickr account.

Speaking of friend management, I still think Dopplr has one of the best systems out there, especially their “others you might know feature”.

What was that big thing? Yesterday? Up in the sky? If you happened to look up sometime around 3 pm, you might have seen it: A twin-deck Airbus A380 superjumbo airliner looping around downtown San Francisco.

The A380 was here as part of a promotional tour by Emirates airlines, and I managed to weasel my way aboard for a celebratory 90-minute flight to nowhere. As we cruised in the skies over Northern California, I snacked on frou-frou canapes and explored the brand-new aircraft.

The first class suites are amazing:

Even the economy class seats were relatively roomy, and the onboard entertainment system offered an awful lot of ways to distract yourself. News feeds. On-demand video. The words.

My favorite was the Tailcam, realtime video piped to each passengers’ seat showing the view from the top of the A380’s vertical stabilizer. It’s basically the same view you get in many popular flight sim packages, but it’s more fun when it’s real. Here’s our landing at SFO:

Some people are demanding that Flickr remove videos, others are demanding that Flickr remove photos, but the most important thing that people are demanding from Flickr is Donuts!. Stephen Shankland has more on this movement over at CNET.

If we get 20,000 people to join the group Flickr will be forced to give us free donuts! Join the group if you want Flickr to give you free donuts.

“What do we want? Donuts! When do we want them? Now!”

UPDATE: Matthew Rothenberg, who works for Flickr, confirms that they will in fact be providing donuts. At long last the people are getting what they demanded.

Flickr has just launched their long anticipated video feature. The announcement came in the form of a puppet show posted by Flickr community manager Heather Champ.

I have been testing out Flickr video for the last couple of weeks and it seems to work pretty well and the embeded player is really nice, but one thing to keep in mind is that the videos are limited to 90 seconds with a max upload size of 150MB.

Here’s a video that I’ve uploaded to Flickr of last weekend at the Saint Stupid’s Day Parade. I shot this video with my new Flip Video Ultra camera and edited in iMovie.

This is the message that Flickr displays while your video is being processed.

UPDATE 1: The Flickr Video launch appears to be a soft launch and is not yet available to the public. The test videos I’ve uploaded are still showing up as private.

UPDATE 2: Ok, Flickr has just announced that Flickr Video is now live. I’ve uploaded another test video “We Have Become Content”.

Here are a few photos from tonight’s Flickr Turns 4 party at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco. I shot these with my new Ricoh GR Digital II. I’m still getting used to it, but so far it’s a really great 10-megapixal compact camera that shoots in RAW with excellent manual controls and great low-light performance, not to mention it’s damn sexy. Special thanks to James Home for the inspiration to buy one (he was shooting with his GR II at ETech).
