The Him & Her Chairs from Italian designer Fabio Novembre are unique anatomically-shaped chairs that take the waist-down form of a man and a woman. The chairs are produced by Casamania and are available in several colors.

“Him & Her are born directly from the ideas behind the Panton Chair. An evolution of the hermaphroditic original, declined into the harmony of the two sexes. They assume sculpted forms like naked models of seduction…but they feel no shame.”

The chairs have been spotted by Mission Mission at Osha Thai restaurant in San Francisco, California.

The Elevation iPhone Dock from Oregon-based industrial design firm Elevation Lab is a well-crafted aluminum dock for the iPhone, the iPod Touch and iPod Nano. Casey Hopkins, founder of Elevation Lab, began a fundraising campaign on Kickstarter to bring this dock to a larger market. The docks will be machined and assembled in Oregon.

The current Kickstarter fundraiser record is held by MNML for their iPod Nano watches that we covered in the post, TikTok and LunaTik iPad Nano Multi-Touch Watch. There is a chance that the Elevation Dock campaign will break that record (and surpass the $1 million mark) within the next (and final) days.

Wordpharmacy is a poetry box set in which each part of speech (nouns, verbs, etc.) is represented by a box designed to look like medication packaging. Each box contains an instructional poem “guiding the reader’s ingestion of the given word group.” Wordpharmacy was written by poet Morten Søndergaard and designer Christian Ramsø, both of Denmark. To celebrate the project’s launch, publisher Broken Dimanche Press has converted their Berlin office into a pharmacy storefront. Individual word boxes and the full box set are available for purchase.

Graphic designer Stephen Wildish has just released the 1950s Film Alphabet, a poster that quizzes us on our 1950s movie knowledge. If you like this, we’ve previously posted all of his film alphabet posters. Film alphabet cards, prints and posters are available for purchase from the artist.

“PASS/PORT” is a five book set about different issues surrounding international travel. Each book is designed to resemble a passport. The set was created by Lebanese designer Marwan Kaabour.

PASS/PORT is a set of 5 books in the form of passports that critically investigate the different parts of the travel process. The project attempts to represent the ways the travel document embodies the very essence of restriction rather than allows passage. Our political borders are as closed as ever at a time when our notion of the world is that of a global village or an open city.

BFA Commutations student Victoria Caswell has created the Boy Scouts of America Survival Sewing Kit, a conceptual sewing kit designed to roll-up like a sleeping bag.

This sewing kit for boy scouts meant to resemble a sleeping bag. It is made out of a olive green canvas, and is adorn with pulls and snaps to give the idea of general camping equipment and rolls up and unrolls like a sleeping bag.

Italian model and designer Anna Utopia Giordano has created Pop Bottles, a tongue-in-cheek art project of kid-themed branded booze bottles topped with rubber baby bottle nipples. For example, Grey Goose Vodka becomes “Hello Kitty Vodka”, Jack Daniels Whiskey is now “Fisher-Price Whiskey” and so on. The complete set of Pop Bottles images can be found at her site.

The author says: the bottles are NOT for sale, they are part of an art exhibition. This is an art project to raise social awareness on topics such as alcohol abuse by teens, alcohol abuse by pregnant women, the disinterest of some parents towards their children (abandoned for days between toys and video games), how far marketers can go to gain the attention of their younger customers. There are no commercial purposes.

Artist and Stanford University professor Grace Hawthorne is behind Paper Punk, a unique building block system made of paper for creating design objects or toys. Fab currently has Paper Punk products available to purchase. Additional designs are available at the Paper Punk store.

With a few simple folds, colorful 2D flat shapes transform into bold 3D geometric pieces to create spectacular looking paper toys and art forms. It was founded with a simple ambition – to enable people to exercise their creativity and make things with their hands.

LEGO has collaborated with Moleskine to create a set of limited edition LEGO Moleskine pocket-sized notebooks which are available now for pre-order. They each have an attached cover brick and are available in four colors: black, yellow, red and green. Mini figs are not included.

It’s a union where two platforms for free expression unite, where the legend of Lego meets the legendary notebook. A cult limited edition, with a real Lego plate set in the iconic Moleskine cover.

The inside has 192 plain pages, a coloured bookmark ribbon, themed flyleaf and an inner pocket in coloured fabric. It comes with Lego themed adhesive labels.

Tyler School of Art design student Nick Dunlap has created the Prohibition Preparedness Kit, a clever concept case for carrying around bottles (and disguise labels) of the fictional prohibition-themed Speakeasy wine. It reminds me of the Executair Trav-l-bars, those wonderful vintage portable travel bars.

This project is a 1920s inspired wine from a vineyard near Chicago, packaged in a Prohibition Preparedness Kit. The kit contains items such as breathmints, disguise labels and corkscrew. But more importantly, the kit comes with Hooch Estate Vineyard’s Merlot and Chardonnay.

Former Green Beret medic, Michael Garnier of Out ‘n’ About Treehouse Treesort, has built an amazing Ewok-like village of treehouses on his property in rural Oregon which he partially operates as a bed-and-breakfast “treesort”. He also has become an industry leader in treehouse construction and has helped develop the Garnier Limb, which is a better way to build structures on trees. Recently, Fair Companies got a tour of the property and created an interesting short film about his unique structures and the story behind them. They later followed him to his personal treehouse home and got the scoop on what may be the world’s largest treehouse. The home is 1800 square feet and is supported by 7 trees.

The Empty Memory jewelry collection from designers Yoo-Kyung Shin and Hanhsi Chen also doubles as USB memory sticks. Each one of these conceptual pieces, one called Structure and the other Transparency, is cast in “high-quality 316 stainless steel” and then hand-polished to create a unique wearable USB stick. California-based design studio, DKNG, was recently asked by IFC’s Portlandia to create a poster for their upcoming Season 2 release. The poster they created was for the episode 201 titled “Mixology” in which Carrie makes a mixed tape for a mixologist (hence the image of a rustic wooden boombox). While the poster was used only for promotional purposes and is not for sale, it is available to download as a free desktop image.

Famous movies were transposed to earlier eras with different actors and directors in this clever movie poster series by designer Peter Stults. The series is inspired by a similar movie poster project by designer Sean Hartter.

Menu Design in America: 1850-1985 is a beautiful 392-page book from TASCHEN that showcases over 800 examples of printed menu art from the years 1850 to 1985. The book is co-authored by Steven Heller (Typography Sketchbooks) and John Mariani and TASCHEN America Executive Editor, Jim Heimann, acted as the editor for this comprehensive book.

Until restaurants became commonplace in the late 1800s, printed menus for meals were rare commodities reserved for special occasions. As restaurants proliferated, the menu became more than just a culinary listing. The design of the menu became an integral part of eating out and as such menus became a marketing tool and a favored keepsake.

Menu Design is an omnibus showcasing the best examples of this graphic art. With nearly 800 examples, illustrated in vibrant color, this deluxe volume not only showcases this extraordinary collection of paper ephemera but serves asa history of restaurants and dining out in America.
